Laptop - no cdg player usually
Although I own 3 working cdg players and carry an video AB switch which would be needed, I currently have no demand to play customer cdgs.

I'm not sure I'm any of those. Go figure I'm an odd ball.
Hard drive and CDG player

Karen
It goes without saying that the more you can offer your customers the better potential is for increased business. If I owned a KARAOKE BAR I would have the best sound system and selection money could buy. I would offer the capabilities to play anything from CDGS to reel to reel. The more singers and people that walk in the door and spend money the more money I make !!....
Unfortunatley --KJ's don't own the bar and their income can be argued isn't dependant on number of singers and or money spent. If the owners are satisfied with a particuliar KJ's performance there is no incentive for the KJ to offer anything additional. The need to buy ultra expensive mixers and speakers and equipment becomes a PERSONAL CHOICE. The same goes for offering services as little as playing customer cdgs. Offering the ability to play customer cdgs CAN ONLY be a positive addition...but not a required one. Being a KJ is a business and this fact gets lost sometimes by over zealous singers who want to use the words CHEAP or LAZY or NO GOOD to describe a KJ who runs their business the way they feel fit.
Good business practices is NOT to make any singer feel like they're not welcome when they bring in a DISC and common courtesies should be extended when explaining that you don't offer that service. The entire concept is so smple that it seems to get lost on these threads. - sorry for ranting

It took me about 20 minutes to figure out what I needed to do to play a customer CDG with a laptop's DVD drive and install the software on my rig.
I'm totally baffled about why there's so much hubbub on the topic.
Same thing with a thumb drive. I play them directly with Winamp, since I use Sax and Dotty's, and AVG scans the files on the fly just before they're loaded.
Seems more ideological than practical to me.
Silliness.

Like I said, just curious. Not casting judgment, not supporting one thing over another. I should have included CAVS player I guess, too.

My cdg player is a Cavs 203G USB. I've got the bases covered even if they bring in a SCDG.

I can/support everything from Laserdisc, cdg, VCD, thumbdrive with various karaoke formats. Only format I have never had brought in was SCDG - but I believe Hoster will accomodate that as well! DVD is another that's i've never had brought in.

I use the HP DV2z and has the optional external optical drive which also plays cdg disks. As for playing the song files on my hdd, I just use VLC.

After 16 years in the business, I have yet to have someone bring their own disc. I guess I could invest in powerkaraoke's siglos player recorder for $50 and play it off my laptop's drive but I don't really expect to have to do so. I could like a guy I know invest in a cheap toy player like you can get from Walmart or Kmart.

Danny are you sure you're in connecticut and not antarctica? kidding! I just love Mohegan Sun casino! I find it rather interesting that you've had no cdgs from customers in 16 years...that's amazing.
Are you in the city, suburban area, or outskirts? Sorry, i 'm not familiar with Waterbrury and i don't have a map handy right this moment.

Come to think of it, we have yet to have anyone come with their own set of laser discs. But if they did, we could play them.

I have a few dozen Laser Discs but I would never expect a KJ to be able to play them.

They are a bit cumbersome to lug around but if you brought one in, we could do it. It's not that I'm pushing the return of the laser, it is just that the Pioneer laser disc player is our most reliable CD&G player so far.
