For those singers who bring in their own discs to a Karaoke Show

How imnportant is the KJ's ability to change Keys' on your discs ?

I don't get to many shows away from my own and when I head out to a show I've never been to before, I will take my own songs (been disappointed too many times by a crappy book). I sing everything in the same key as the original so key changes are not an issue to me, but I do have singers who bring in music who always ask for the key to be adjusted for them. Hoster does that for me.

very important if they want me to become a regular customer. Not so much if I'm only going to be there once; like on a vacation. I make a lot of home made tracks that aren't available commercially so if the KJ can't or won't play them, It's not as gratifying an experience as it could or should be. I bring a certain variety to a karaoke show. I don't sing the same 5 or 10 songs every time I go to karaoke. I enjoy learning new songs and introducing those songs to people that might never hear them otherwise.

Sorry. I misread the question.

Sometimes on a Bon Jovi song where I have purchased the backing track and made my own CDG file from it, I may still need a minor key change. If need be, I guess I could alter the key myself and have the song in both the original key and the key that I would sing it in. If a friend of mine wanted to sing it in the original key I would want to have it that way as well. I have a couple of custom discs that I made with the key changes that I need already factored in so if the KJ can't change keys, I use those discs.

I only do two songs (so far) that I like it changed, and I rarely ever sing them anyhow... (Sara Evans, Coalmine- I like down one; Pin Monkey, Barbed Wire n' Roses- I like up two)

If a KJ couldn't do that? Hell, I'd bytch, moan and groan, throw something at him, then stomp out the door swearing he was the worst KJ in town.

Nah, I'd deal with it and sing other songs. Too many songs out there to whine about not being able to sing one or two. Not on my list of "very important" for a venue.

Key change was probably more important to me when I first started "singing" as I would pick songs I liked rather than songs I could do. Now I can sing more songs in the original key or know how to pick them better. But there are still a few I need to change the key on.

Sometimes people bring their own discs because they are really good, serious singers who like having their own special songs with the optimal arrangment. Those people probably don't need a key change. Then there are those like myself who bring their own because they aren't that good and need to practice at home and have the version they are used to and the key where they need it in order to get near the tune. Key change would be essential for them.

Bruce, you surely wouldn't make a "homemade" track that needs the key adjusted?

:headscratch:

Not important at all. I purchase my tracks in the key that I sing the songs in.

As a singer, it's not important to me at all. I sing the songs in the key they're recorded it. If it's out of my range I don't sing it.

As a KJ I've found it to be a relatively unimportant feature as well. I've had exactly 2 singers since I went PC based 3 years ago that have ever asked me to adjust the key. One of them is a regular who ultimately went back to singing the song in the original key. The other was a one time attempt at a tune by a singer I see only very occasionally and she's never attempted the song since. I have the capability in case they want it, but my singers almost never ask for it.

That's how it is at our local place, not that I keep my eye on the machine, but as far as I've noticed, it's not asked for.

Though, on a side note, I do have to admit... there are certain singers, at certain times, to whom I'd like to SUGGEST they try a key change:)

VERY! I usually drop at least 1-2 keys on many songs these days.

All of my personal CDGs have been burned at the original keys that they were produced. Unlike BFFL, I do not know how to burn a song onto disc in a different key. There's a handful of songs that I do require a key-change, so that would be very important for me; however, if the KJ can't do this, I do have other songs on my personal discs that don't require a key-change.

Even tho this is not what you asked, there have been times when I've gone to a show where the KJ couldn't play my discs (PC operated), and when I chose a song that required a key-change, it didn't sound like the key was changed (believe me, I can tell the difference between on-key and up 3).

It's funny tho.... regardless of whether the KJ plays my disc or I chose a song from his PC, I never realized how many songs I did require a key-change for until I discovered that the KJ couldn't change the key.

How do you do that? Or do you mean that you only purchase songs that were recorded in a key that you are able to sing in?

Some of the on line karaoke sites allow you to pick the key that you want the song to be produced in.

Most of the tracks I purchase are from professional backing tracks suppliers and they have them available in different keys. Of the tracks that I do not get from these suppliers, I only purchase the tracks that are in the right key for me.

Hey BruceFan, why is it that whenever you quote from another post, you don't get the formatted quote boxes which make it easier to read? Are you deleting something from the quote text?

EDIT: Hmmm.... I just hit the quote button on BruceFan's last post and did a "Preview" and it formatted perfectly, so all the required info is in the text. Now it's got me baffled as to why it doesn't format correctly when posted!

In today's world, whether disc based or computer, changing keys shouldn't be a problem. Profeesional machines have key change capability and I would imagine so does the software for computer shows.

I tried with the mod edit button and like you said all the codes are there. I resub the post but it revert back to the old bad quote.
Bruce, can you check your profile and see if some of the feature is off.

Sorry to go off topic........ and now please post on.

In all my yrs, I've had it happen maybe once or twice to drop the key with a personal disc from someone else, so I don't think it is that big a deal. I can certainly do it though if you ask. :D

When I burn my disc that have songs out of my range, I first load the audio tracks of those songs to AA and lower the key. For country songs I normally have to up the key. That way I don't need to ask the KJ to change key.
But if the disc I bring are original and a song I want to sing from it is out of range for my voice, then I may need to ask the KJ to change the key.
Most players have a key changer. I don't see any problem with it both as a KJ and singer.
