Likes:
1. A Personable host - one who seems to care about the customers (singers and nonsingers) by making them feel welcome -- introducing themselves to new singers, etc. Not just standing behind the board and ignoring everyone.
2. A book that is up to date and clean. (Not sticky pages, all sorts of songs that aren't in the book)
3. A reasonable selection of music but with the ability to play my CDG if I take it with me (usually new music, not in anyone's book yet, or something kind of obscure -- I sing a lot of blues).
4. A decent mix - don't expect perfection but at least an attempt to make singers sound good.
5. A crowd that pays attention to the singers and claps for each singer, great or not - I believe a host can train people to do this.
Dislikes:
1. Cold host that treats people like idiots and makes singers feel like they're intruding.
2. A show that doesn't start on time, especially when that time is advertised.
3. A host that takes an interminable time between singers, even when the rotation is long.
4. Poorly mixed sound.
5. DEAD AIR.
6. A crowd that ignores everyone but their homies.
7. Drunk singers that aren't singing, just yelling and shouting expletive-deletives.

Deal breakers
A host that takes bribes !
Rotation - people singing 2 or 3 songs in a row, playing favorites, losing my slip
Unfriendly atmosphere - people not clapping, can't get a drink, host doesn't interact with audience
A host that thinks the night is all about them.
Music sets in between singers
Things I love
Fair rotation
Friendly patrons
Friendly host
A host that doesn't set and forget for the night
Good bar service
Adequate equipment
At least a few of my favorite songs to sing

There are a few things that will keep me from coming back to a show:
1. A host who runs an unfair rotation or is a complete jerk to the singers.
2. A host who inserts themselves into the rotation when there is a big rotation (If I'm waiting more than 45 minutes to sing each time and yet the host is singing, that's a problem for me).
3. Audio that is literally painful to listen to. If it's giving me a headach, I'm not staying.
4. A song selection that is horribly out of date (i.e. no song from the last 2 years).
As far as the perfect show, no one has one. And I think that's because even if such a thing did exist, two completely different shows could both be perfect. There's more than one way to skin a cat and much depends on the venue, their clients, etc. For me, I know I've always got something to learn in all aspects of what I do. I refuse to ever believe that I know everything there is to know about audio engineering, hosting, or anything else in between.

Go up to the bartender, ask "where's karaoke set-up", he points to the guy behind the set-up. You ask the guy, "where are your songbooks", reply, "someone STOLE my (book) last week. "Where's your monitor for lyrics", reply, "you just sing along with the song" OK!!!! "How do we know what songs you have", reply, hands me about 15 discs (still in the wrapper), and says "just let me know what you want, if it's NOT THERE, I can just play the (regular) cd, and you can sing along with it". Believe it or not, THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED. Needless to say, we left immediately, TOTALLY irritated that we wasted half the night for this. Not to mention that we had dinner there while WAITING for the (KJ) to set up. WORST part of this story is we STILL drive by this place and see the ADVERTISEMENT (karaoke) every FRIDAY NIGHT. No Lordairgtar, it was at a place called the Roadhouse, 5 corners in Grafton. Since you dj car shows, it's next to Wayne's Drive-In where there's a Wednesday night cruise. I Know YOU would never do that, WOULD YOU?
