I have really never had many complaining about the monitors, quite the opposite really. Some of the "not so good" singers are the ones that tend to complain the most as they do not want to hear themselves, but a simple adjustment on the board, I turn the vocals down in the monitor and leave the music & the main mix intact - can't do that if no monitors are being used.

For the most part, I only use the singer's monitor when circumstance make it hard for the singers to hear themselves.

For me, this would be anytime they're singing from behind the PA, which is always unless they take the microphone off stage. So out of curiosity, do you setup with the singers behind the PA and they're happy with what they hear?

It is fascinating how much singers can differ in their preferences I guess.

Of course, if they're behind the PA as you suggested, monitors are in place. I try to avoid that configuration if I can and I rarely encounter any feedback problems when the singers are out in front.

I have had circumstances where the venue is very wide and the speakers so spread out to accommodate that width, as a result the singers have had a hard time hearing the music

As you said, when the singers complains I adjust the monitor and if need be we can just turn the monitor down completely!

I use a sub at all my shows, but because of the size and shape of the room I have an unusual set up. I have adiquate space to set up, but not enough to spread out my speakers, so I mount both speakers on the same stand in the corner just in front of my work station. Although both speakers are faceing to the front, one is turned slightly so the singer can hear the mix, but not so much as to cause feedback. (I have a special mount that goes on the speaker stand that allows me to mount both speakers on the same stand). I just use one sub. I run my mix mono since the speakers are so close together. One channel runs the mains, and the other runs the sub. My sub was custom made with light weight plywood, and a neodynim speaker, and only weighs about 35 pounds. Very light weight compaired to most subs.

How dee all and happy turkey day!!!

Since implementing a sub and a monitor into my set up, I've only NOT had both at a show once. That was because it was in a library and the gig ended one hour before my regular gig started a block away so I was using my back up and had to budget my tear down and set up time.

My Yorkville NX55Ps have plenty of thump for 12" but c'mon, once you've had the sub, how could you not want it? I have an 18" Carvin and with it pumping along with the Yorkies, I get lots of compliments. I've never had anyone complain about the monitor other than to ask to turn the vocals up a bit. I'm actually overkill on my monitor as I am using a 15" Behringer but why not? It's a bit heavy but why spend more money when I can use it or otherwise have it sit idle.

If I did a gig where I would go without the sub for some reason, I would still have the monitor. I now have a cargo trailer to transport my gear so it's not really that much work to move the sub or monitor and hook up is a snap, even for me!

I've been thinking about that Carvin sub for some time now. I've been debating replacing the Mackies with one or two of those. The 15" SRS subs are nice but don't move the air the way an 18" can. Hmm maybe a trip to Iowa to check out your rig would be in order (I should just plan a tour of the entire Mid-West I guess  )
