I play bumper music between singers. It helps keep the rhythm going and people have told me they like it instead of the dead air from other shows. Sometimes I play the Mentos comercial song, sometimes Underdog or George of the Jungle will come on.

Isn't that "Filler Music" too (since you're describing something that is probably less than 1 minute in play time)? If not, could everyone please give me their definition of "Bumper Music" vs "Filler Music?"

I cannot believe because I called it something different that you would think there is a difference. It IS filler music. It IS preventing dead air. Turning a knob up and down as one disc ends and another starts playing does not waste any time but far be it from me to do anything right.

What Jackasse's that are on here.

Like Jam, I never worked in Radio or Broadcasting, so the term "Bumper Music" was Greek to me. I asked you a simple question, as to whether there was a difference in the 2 terms. Nowhere in my post did I say you did anything wrong. There was no need for you to get insulting about it in your answer (by calling me a J-A).

No, I suspect he was calling *me* a jackass because I said the term bumper music "seemed semantically dishonest".

All your jackasses are belong to us!

The comment did not just refer to this post but other comments I read through the day as well.

Cue, for clarification, I definately was not talking about you.

I really didn't want to name names though (well I did) and probably should have not posted at all. Like I learned in kindergarden, if you don't have anything nice to post, then don't post at all. Something like that.

For my regular show I am often hitting Go for the next singer as soon as the previous song ends. The singers are usually keeping an eye on the rotation and most are ready to go.

Every now and then a singer is distracted and the dead air is a strong cue that it is someone's turn and I can rely on the regulars help in calling the singer to the stage.

On most nights at my regular show I rarely go over 30 seconds of dead air between songs.

That said I have been to shows where filler music was done well and others where it was done poorly. It can be good in moderation but bad in excess.
