I don't know if this belongs in this section but here goes. I belong to a local Karaoke Meetup group. It's run by a woman who schedules karaoke from two to five nights a week. We as a member show up and sing after we RSVP we will be there. She's cheerful sort with I don't want to offend anyone type of personality.

I have attended a bunch of events hosted by the group. Last week, I went to one venue that was just horrible. The KJ keep saying that he's the best in the world. Then every song, he would interrupt other people singing with his own singing. Not just a few, every song. He would jump out to the stage and take over the stage if someone was a weak singer. Not only that, every other song was a dance song. There was this one hot woman in our group and he would keep asking her to some to dance so he can watch. He spent half the time with dance music.

If that wasn't enough, he had no rotation set up at all. He kept adding people, often the "regulars" and "friends" to the middle of the rotation, not at the end. How did I know that they were his friends? He would announce "so and so is in the house" even during the song sometime. I was 6th on the rotation as I got there right on time and sang a song around 9:15PM. At that time we only had like 10 singers. Around 10:45PM, I went up and asked when I would be up next. He said he didn't know because it's a "busy" night. I just left.

So, that's not the problem. On Meetup.com, there is a section where you can leave a feedback on the venue and the event. I left a really negative feedback on the venue but not the event. I just found out that the organizer of the group just deleted my comments and left a good feedback on her own. I am not happy about this. I left a message on the event section asking her if she deleted my comments and so far no reply. I am thinking that she will erase that as well.

So, although I enjoy going out with the group, I am not sure if I should continue with the group. Any thoughts?

Start your own Meetup group that goes to the good, true Karaoke bars? If the others are Karaoke fans like you...they feel the same way. I know I would.

We have one up here as well that the organizer is also a host & the majority of shows they 'meetup' at are her own shows. They do go to other places, they came to mine a couple times, unfortunately they didn't like it because it was too busy, so I got some negatives on that issue, the other was the smoke.
Like suggested, start your own & go to 'karaoke' shows, be honest about them when rating.

Take it to her....
On the next meet up, with the others in the group around, ask her why she deleted your comments. Don't let her hide, and take it to her.

The problem is that for any organization such as a Karaoke meet up, sometimes the person is running it with some personal agenda.

Maybe it may be as simple as a kickback of free drinks (or whatever) provided by the venue. Otherwise it may be to help a friend (who is not a good KJ). OR for whatever reason.

The problem is that creating a false "message board" or review area that is impartial, apparently this one is not.

No easy solution to this one, as the person is not at all likely to give up the rights to edit or delete reviews.

The simple solution is to not place too much merit in any individual reviews good or bad anywhere on the web. Who knows it may be the KJ's gf/bf writing the good review or it could be their ex writing the bad review.

I would address the main problem here first. From what I can tell it is not having to go back to this guys shows. Why not ask if you all can vote on where the meetings will be. If you find out one of the meetings will be at this guys show again, simply don't go.

I would also address the fact your posts were deleted and why. It seems some of this may be solved by discussing the problems at the meetings. I'm not sure how these meetings are conducted, but I would think if you were upset by what was going on others would be too.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Last year I took over as the new organizer of the Seattle Karaoke Stars Meetup group which was started in 2004. (I've since moved it to Yahoo Groups.) We do monthly events. It's my goal to bring the group to many different karaoke venues. Do we have some favorites that get good reviews from the members? Of course! Have we been to one or two clunkers? Unfortunately, yes.

Eben, I would talk to the organizer of the group and ask her WTF? I'm sure you wrote your honest impressions of the host and venue. Maybe it was a friend of hers. Maybe she took it as a personal insult that she would bring the group to such a crappy place. Maybe she's getting a kickback from the bar to bring her group there. You really don't know.

As to whether I would throw the baby out with the bathwater and never go to another Meetup? I would try to get past this one unfortunate event and select those Meetups where you know there's a good karaoke program.

You got a negative because you were to busy? What a crock. Busy to me would be a possitive, saying "hey this guys doin' it right and has got it goin' on". Smoke I can understand. I'm a nonsmoker and it doesn't bother me that much, but the smoke always bothered the wife. And we were both raised with smoking parents. I have to say though, since the smoking ban in Illinois took affect, I've noticed the difference when we cross state lines.

I agree. You enjoy the group, so why stop going? Bring it up the next outing in front of the whole group.

"Hey my comments disappeared on the review from that last place we went to, anyone else have this problem."

Something like that, so it's not so direct in finger pointing. Despite the fact it looks like it could only be one person. If you don't like how it turns out from there, then I'd stop going and or whatever.
