Sorry, the David Allen Coe song was the "Please Come To Boston". As for the "First Cut Is the Deepest", I just found out the other day on Rhapsody that it is supposedly an original Cat Stevens song, Don't remember ever hearing it. Only knew a few Cat Stevens' songs.
Now Rod Steward, that I have heard.

I sometimes will sing "Those Were The Days", Mary Hopkins. Just change one word. When it gets to the right part I just change "that woman really me" to "that person really me", and the crowd loves it. I don't see anything wrong at all with doing that. I once drew a Madonna song during a kamakaze round and didn't have a clue. Just listened for a bit and then went for all it was worth. Turned out fine.

OK, y'all piqued my curiosity on the Please Come to Boston thing. I knew that it was written by Dave Loggins, and it turns out that it was originally recorded on the Dave Loggins album of the same name. It was then redone by David Allan Coe. Over the course of the last 30 years, it has been recorded by (at least): Reba, Kenny Chesney, Suzanne Prentice, Jackopierce (I don't have a clue either!), and Willie Nelson. At what point does a song become a "Standard"?

I'm thinking of doing " Its A Heart ache" by Bonnie Raitt. I'm pretty sure I'll do it this week.

Anyone have any suggestions for a high tenor as far as a possible woman's song. Man, I was kinda thinking Un-Break My Heart, but with as good a Toni Braxton does it, I don't know if I want to diss her like that.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggeations for a high tenor, let me know. Thanks.

I saw one girl one night sing "you think my tractors sexy" and she was cute and having a lot of fun with the song, the crowd loved it.

I have a low alto voice, most men can get higher than me, I do "B***H" by Meredith Brooks well and "BAD MOON RISING" ok. Can anyone recommend other songs that would be good for me to sing. Unfortunately I can do hard rock better than other types of music. It is hard though when you are working in a country bar, opening with "WERE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE". Any suggestions.
Also, opening my show has always been sketchy to me. I am fine once I get going because my personality comes out, but my openings are not the best. First of all the there are not that many people there when I open and I feel more nervous. Been doing this for about 3 years, you think I would have it down by now. Any suggestions my fellow KJs....

My first Karaoke song (using traditional - on screen lyrics method) was "You make me feel like a Natural Woman".
I have a weird vocal range so I have the ability to do high end stuff - Journey or Styx, and low end songs like "MMM MMMM MMMM MMMM"
I have Gender Bent whilst doing shows - Helped a group of ladies sing "Man I feel like a Woman" and "Who's Bed have your boots been under". I also sang "Oops I did it again" one time.
Of course I am pretty receptive if someone wants me to do a song.
BTW - Fleetwood Mac is another group that guys will sing.

Years ago (totally sober) at a benefit show I sand "satin sheets" with a mop on my head, in a womans flannel nighty and rough cut boots on.Ther e is not a song I will not sing. I sing "Indy Day" by Martina McBride with just as emotion as anybody. First time I ever saw by Flack.. A good song to try is "But I Wiil" by Faith Hill. I do it sort of like Earnest Tubb & and seems to me maybe he did do it. Another is "Made For Lovin You" by Anastacia The next one I want to try will be "whatever you say"
One I have wanted to do for a long time is "The Woman In Me". Never have yet ..
Oh yea...The cowboys in the bar next door emptied into the dance hall when I sang it. I raised about $120 And nobody...Absolutely nobody took a picture..
True music does not have a gender.....

Heck, I did redneck woman the other night wearing my wife's dolly parton wog, and a pair of fake boobs. It went over pretty well. Kinda like stand by your man by The Blues Bro's.

We have a guy at our bar who does a male version of Red Neck woman but changes the words to suit him and make it funny. But you know what I am sooo tired of that song. Our radio station plays it about once an hour and everybody wants to hear it at the bar. Oh well, such is life .

Okay, nobody asked for my opinion, and I don't know most of you who have posted in this topic, but I wanted to add my comments.
I've heard alot of gender bending, and for the most part I think it's great. I think if you're gonna do it publicly, you need to make sure you adjust the "he/she" stuff.
I once in a while do Hank Williams Sr. stuff. I've done a couple at karaoke clubs. I even subbed one here once. Usually they are well recieved, but I have gotten looks like "What they heck is a female doing messing with HANK SR songs ?!?!?"
But ya know what, those that don't like it can Kiss My Grits. That's my opinion. And, usually it is women who gender-bend. But that's not necessary. Alot of songs would sound great with a male behind it. Look at the song "Who's Cheatin' Who" by Charley Maclaine (female), Alan Jackson redid that one and it was a huge hit for him.
I've done Credence, Lynyrd Skynyrd, even an old Buck Owens song.
I say, if it's a song and you like it- sing it.
Now I gotta admit, I would LOVE to hear a guy version of "Redneck Woman". That's my favorite song now a days. On the radio WAY too much, but still and all my favorite. Can't imagine it as a gender bender.
I think the admin should open up another genre category for new subs called "Gender Bender". I think I'll PM him with that idea. I think more people would step up and do it.
Peace everyone~ and Harmony~ and Rythm~ and Rhyme

I'm straight and I'll sing chick songs every once in awhile. I butcher them in the same style I butcher everything else. I'm not to fond of changing the words. I know it sounds gay but I'd rather stay true to the lyrics, and I'd rather hear others stay true as well, especially when a girl sings a guy song, because the lesbian aspect is so sensual. I do get some remarks when I sing a chick song, but I just tell them that the whole karaoke thing is a little gay anyway. Ya gotta have fun.

I have one show a week that gets billed as New Music Thursday. On that day, the people at that show generally sing songs they have never done before--it's a nice change of pace from the usual show.
One of the ways we explore new music is by doing themed nights (boy bands, hair bands, bad 80's music, etc.) and one of the most popular segemnts ever was a gender bender section. Everyone had a blast, and I often get people coming to me at other shows asking if I plan on doing a gender bender segment. I always tell them that they don't need MY permission to sing a gender bender! They just gotta sign up!

It depends on the song. I'll do Joan Jett or Pat Benatar, but I won't do Madonna or Britney...even if the song is gender neutral.
One chick I will do (surprising to me, at least) is Karen Carpenter. She had such a low alto that "Rainy Days and Mondays" is an almost perfect fit for my range.
