We talked of my weight loss progress and in two years (as far back as his computer would go) I lost a whopping 50 pounds. that's a lot of avoirdupois, people. I had the goal to get under 400 (yeah, I'm a fat arse) by this visit and I did. i got to 399. I was 396 last week but Thanksgiving happened.
I would like to lose 20 to 30 myself, how did you do it if you don't mind me asking?
BTW, congrats

I cut portion size, cut potatoes, cut fried and breaded food. if I do well in a quarter, I treat myself with a two piece fried chicken dinner at Culvers. I take a half sammitch and apple to work. I walk the spring loaded bark machine known as a dog.

Wise man once said, "If your dog is too fat, YOU don't get enough exercise".
This is exactly my problem. I need to have my dog help me lose about 80 pounds.

Cutting carbs...I lost weight a couple of times myself doing Atkins, and once I got started my appetite diminished considerably, just like the book said. Still waiting on the majic cure all pill to come out cause I love to eat.

People who strictly follow the Atkins plan are destined to fail. You cannot maintain that regimen. This is also why groups like weight watchers and Jenny Craig change up their plans. I eat stuff that would never pass muster on those plans. Like I said, I cut the starch out but I still have it when I go to family dinners at the holidays. I'm not really dieting, just reducing portions and removing known weight adders. If I trangress, I don't beat myself up over it. I just continue with the portion reduction at the next meal. I tend to eat only when hungry and I do not fix myself to regular meal times except maybe lunch at work because I have no control over that. If I get up in the morning and i don't feel like eating breakfast, I don't.

Gregg - I think the way you did it is the best way. I think the toughest part is making it a life style change and not just a diet. I'll gain and lose 20 -30lbs every couple of years because I am a successful dieter, but not very successful at making the life style change. I need to drop about 20lbs right now. I'm doing it different this time by exercising every day and watching what I'm eating instead of doing a drastic diet. I'm losing the weight much slower, but I'm hoping this is the answer to keeping it off this time.
Any diet works if you stay on it. The tough part is keeping it off. At least for me.
If I just count calories ( stay within 1200 cals a day) and watch my fat intake I'll lose a couple pounds a week. In fact I've done this so many times I know I'll lose 20lbs in 6 weeks. I can stay on a diet without cheating at all for a very long time, but once I'm done I want to eat everything in sight. My problem is I love food. I guess you could say I'm a foodoholic.
