One of my competitors (who pirates karaoke, even burns customers copies on the spot) started recruiting folks to slander us on yelp.com. It was a long drawn out battle between us, them, and yelp who just seemed to want to play the role of illegal arms dealer. During this entire time of fake reviews we had yelp salespeople calling us, saying they would default our reviews to sort descending so that the 5 star reviews would appear first.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar happen.

I haven't been through such a thing -- you have my sympathies.

It would seem to me, that if Yelp publishes those reviews and you decided to sue, that they could be named as a party to a libel suit the same as any newspaper that printed libelous material. Perhaps the mention of such a legal theory by an attorney would be enough to persuade Yelp to reveal the identities of those who are badmouthing your company. If not their pockets are probably deeper than your competitors and would make for a juicier settlement.

Consult an Attorney and send both YELP and whoever the originator is a CEASE AND DESIST LETTER or you will bring suit. That ought to do it.

I checked out the site and you have a bizillion 4 to 5 star ratings and it was difficult to find anything bad about you. But what a low thing to do, anyway. Just goes to show that if someone lacks ethics in one area, they will rotten in others.

So you invented the karaoke robot?

At your show's, tell everyone that if they liked the show to go to Yelp.com and write a review. Soon the good will far outweigh the bad.

Besides...I don't think the average person puts much weight in those reviews...especially when they are anonymous & outrageous.

I don't put much stock in those reviews either. A large percentage of them are "Plants" anyway. I never heard of yelp.com until reading this thread. I took a look at listing in NYC... Gotta luv those people that say it's the BEST Karaoke they've ever been to, while adding that it cost them $1 or $2 per each song. I feel like screaming at those people... asking them if they ever even looked for a place in the city to sing at.... there's so much Karaoke in NY... AND IT'S FREE (no charge per song). As far as Karaoke Clubs go (those are the type that are private booths (at an hourly rate)).... That's a totally different animal.
