I have a Mackie 1500 Sub, its too heavy for me to lift, and the shape is ackward for using a dolly, I've bought 4 good 4" swivel heavy duty casters,, my question,, mount the wheels on the bottom, back or side ?

I would think NOT on the bottom as then your speaker would be rattlling on the casters instead of a more sturdy flat floor or carpet etc.

If you put on the side --the the casters are sticking out when in use ?

None of the above. Nail 2x4's along the edge of a 3 foot square of 3/4 inch plywood and attach the casters to that. One jackleg cart that can be used to roll anything.

The cart would weight more than the speaker

Of the subs I've seen that come with casters as standard equipment, they all have been mounted on the back.
Jams reasoning makes sense and I am sure is the reason that they are mounted on the back.

Well hang on a minute, let's be clear about what sub you have. If you have the SRS-1500 (the dual round ports on the front), then you can't mount anything to the rear because the entire rear panel is the metal plate that the amplifier is mounted to. If you have the newer SWA-1501, then my suggestion would be to mount the casters on the back using short wood screws and surface mount casters.

I would never recommend putting four casters on the bottom of a square sub woofer cabinet. If you do have the SRS-1500, I'd look at making the cart as described earlier.

I'm surprised you say they don't fit well on a hand truck (dolly). Our production company owns a pair of SRS-1500's and we stack one on top of the other and take them in and out together on the hand truck no problem.
