Unless you're completely tone deaf, it's like anything else you do, the more you do it the better you get. Now that doesn't mean you'll become a professional. How good were you at your first job or starting your career? The first time you tried cooking or use a hammer? Or even making love for that matter?

One of my regulars started out rather poorly. She would get up on stage and you could see she was shy, scared and definitely lacked confidence. You could barely hear her in the mic, even when I turned it up as far as I could.
Then one day she came in, got up to sing her first song and really belted it out. You could actually hear her and I had to turn the mic DOWN! Her confidence level was WAAYYY up. I was stunned.
I wondered what had changed so dramatically in one short week, so I had to ask at the end of the night what happened.
She had one word to say: "SingStar".
It's a "game" for the Sony Playstation. Apparently it grades you on how well you sing the songs. That might be something to consider trying. It lets you know when you're off and then you can learn how to be on key with it. My singer learns her songs until she gets them around 80% or so and then she sings them at karaoke!

What a great idea Diafel....I am going to share this with some people who come to my shows who are working up the courage. Might be just what they need.

Leopard Lizard nailed it. The other suggestions were all great for helping to IMPROVE your singing, but to get up and just do it you need the right attitude- and a sense of humor is a great start! Remember, Karaoke is all about having FUN.

You might start at home with your wife. Worried about looking like a fool? Guess what? Your wife already knows all about you, and loves you anyway... :D So no worries there.

You might try starting with duets. This is how I get less confident people started at my shows. The number one starter duet that comes to mind would be you and your wife singing "I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher. Almost impossible to to hurt badly from your point of view- remember Sonny's vocal skills?

Get up and give it a try! You'll have fun, and want to do it again. See how you do, THEN go the improvement route.

BTW: A little "liquid courage" may be helpful as well- at least to begin with. Just don't overdo.... GOOD LUCK!

A person that isn't the best singer, but is having fun with it, and it shows, is just as much fun for me to watch and listen to.

And these are also the people that draw the audience into the song with them and recieve the most crowd adulation and applause.
