Nothing wrong with hearing "Don't Stop Believin'" or "Unchained Melody" at karaoke... if the person doing it can actually SING!

I wish I could agree, but I don't hear good or bad anymore with Journey. I stopped believing a long time ago

Tequila?

Tequila, IMHO, has been one of the most useful tools for me for private parties. If you want to get the ball rolling with people who are apprehensive about singing, that song is the way to do it. People immediately loosen up after the boss or guest of honor starts things out dancing and dramatically shouting their one word Karaoke song.

Every Rose has Its Thorn -- uggg...had a guy that used to come in and sing that song and only that song and he was a really horrible singer. Massive evacuation to the smoking area every time he sang it. I used it as an opportunity to get creative with the board...how close could I get before nobody could hear him?

I have to disagree as far as Great Gig In The Sky. It's a moderately tough tune, but gets a good response ...I did laugh at the 'words' on the screen when I first saw them , though.

Guns n Roses Cold November Rain gets my vote for 'why'...good song, but it just goes on....and on....and on.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly with you "Great Gig" is awesome to do, it was just really out of left field to see that one made for karaoke, which was my whole intention for this post. Again, songs with long instrumentals are not really what I look for in an oddity. "November Rain" always goes over well when and if sing at my shows, and I don't quesiton why it was made. It was and is a very very popular song. I look for something like "Born Slippy" from Underworld... weird choice for karaoke! In fact any of the "electronica" from the late 90's... like "Praise You" from Fatboy Slim? Never understood why they made that one for karaoke.

Just noticed we have Jackson Brownes "Tear Down/Stay" medley. Not only is it really slow but it appears to be about a half hour long. It is fun to have but will probably best be done in the privacy of the home.

I've sung it once or twice but have always left it for the end of the night--the tear down loadout time.

Because she doesn't sing, she wails. Give me a break. Please!
Because she is overrated and overplayed. Honestly, she isn't that good. Really.
Sorry, but most of us are sick to death of her.
With Cancon (radios must play at least 60% - I think - Canadian) laws what they are, and the shortage of Canadian artists, most radio stations grab Celine. Yuck!
They lack of knowledge about who Canadian artists are and take the cop out. Bryan Adams in another that they fall back on. But at least he's good.

I tend to agree with Diafel on this one - Then when you have an amateur singer trying to reproduce the CD sound, that is a recipe for disaster. I do have one singer who does a fabulous job on Celine songs but those are few and far between.

I killed the crowd with Edmund Fitzgerald.

But any slow song or western can be a crowd killer when there's great momentum from the previous songs.

But I got to throw in Eagles Hotel California, overplayed with a long outro.

Taxi by Harry Chapin. A GREAT song (imo), I love to sing it, but NOT at karaoke. It has a middle section that is instrumental, and everyone thinks it is an outtro, then another verse comes in. It's also a LONG song. When I have a party AT HOME, then I might sing it, but NOT at my show.

Why I love SBI and Sunfly: "Song To The Siren" by This Mortal Coil, and "Teadrop" by Massive Attack. Nothing stranger than Liz Frasier for karaoke

I'd say "Angel" by Massive Attack definitely fits in this category. The song is about 60% instrumental, and the part that is sung consists of about 3 different notes.
