My as yet unimplemented idea is to use password protected zip files. My program will store an encrypted version of the password and then unzip each file for playback every time. After playback, the temporary files will be deleted. Unfortunately this would still leave the songs available for copying whilst playing.

Also it is possible to turn off plug&play in windows to prevent USB drives from being detected - good if you store the songs on an internal drive. Bad for external drives and almost any other USB device!

You can also edit the 'hosts' file in the windows system folder to redirect away from popular web email sites to prevent emailing of songs.

Finally you can use windows encryption so taking the drive out of the machine shouldn't work either.

All this won't stop anyone who is determined enough, has a linux boot disc etc! There are full hard drive encryption products that my day job laptop has but they cost something!

jOHN, great input on what ways I'm trying...laptop is storing 320+GB of karaoke and partition of dj music of 150GB that I change from time to time or use external hd's for more dj libray....it's me wanting to keep karaoke library being mass produced in any way...plug and play excellent obstruction....I thought merly changing from a NTFS file system encryption and reading it with a fat32 based OS encryption is lost???? at any rate great advice and will try anything that makes sense to me LOL thanks again for any info tossed this way.....best regards staffer

I 2nd that....

But perhaps there would be a way to "watermark" your files so if they do get stolen, you have a way to prove that they where originally yours. I have no way of knowing how to do this, but someone here might.

I have asked Sax&Dotty's to put in an password key function in their program where the ZIP files would be password protected, and then you enter in the password in the program, but it hasn't been implemented.
