Burning disc's

Hi to all the Karaoke heads in the world..........i have been operating Karaoke shows in Australia for 15yrs now....and still love it.

I have a question for anyone how can answer it.

Whenever I purchase a disc i always burn a copy, and once the originals have had there day, I use my copy....is this illegal.

They seem to think so here.....and I don't agree.

I don't really think it should be considered illigal. When people go to stores and buy cd's and then let all of their friends copy them, that is what they don't like. 'Cause then it's like everyone is getting cd's for free and the stores/singers/all those people don't get any profit. But if you are making copies so that when they "have had they're days" you have another copy, I don't see what it could hurt then 'cause you prolly wouldn't be able to find them in stores by that time anyway. It's actually a smart, I mean how many people go buy cd's and soon afterword they get lost or broken or something like that? A lot of people if you think about it! Hey, I should start doing that! Besides, it can't hurt the STORE that bad, afterall, you are buying cd's from them, and then blank ones to make your copies with!

Hope I answered your question well enough, you stilll might want to get more opinions, I was just saying that I agree with you, it shouldn't be illigal.

From talking to some of the K.J.'s, what they do is burn the original and save it but if you were to get audited by the "Karaoke Police" you might have to produce the original. On another note, I entered a contest and turned in my burned CD+G and the K.J. refused it because they required an original because the sponsor was a CD+G producer.

Hello. I always go to Phonglekaraoke.com or their store. They have wonderful service there. And I did ask the clerk there and she said that if you burn a CD+G and sell it - That is ILLEGAL.

However, if you burn a CD+G and still have the original to prove that you bought the CD or have it in your possession - This is NOT Illegal.

As long as you do not resell the copied CD+G it is not illegal.

Shell used to come here quite a bit... She's from Australia, and she says the enforcement of burned discs is a bit more serious than it is here in the states where I'm at...

As with all things, if you want something for nothing, you're basically S.O.L. BUT if you want to merely copy your discs AND keep the originals (use them for proof you own the discs), you can at least convince a judge or jury that you're not trying to PROFIT off the burned library... you're merely protecting your investment.

I'm hearing from more and more KJs that are starting to back up their discs, as they are tired of replacing the originals due to neglect or merely wear and tear. Remember, just the act of taking a disc, and placing it in the machine puts it in jeopardy. If dust is around (venues where smoke is at it's HORRIFYING to the equipment and the cds), if fingerprints are on the disc, or God forbid, if you have an equipment malfunction, you risk the loss of a disc. Not cleaning the discs properly places them at risk. And just the wear and tear of normally cleaning them will EVENTUALLY compromise them.

I see people who put $.25 cent shields on the originals... so the cost between the two is about the same. However, if an accident or theft or something similar happens after you leave your home, you are TOTALLY out of business if you are using originals.

It just doesn't make much sense to me to NOT back them up. EVEN if you do it the way Sound Choice used to say to do it. Use the backup in case the original breaks while you're sending off for the replacement...

but in cases where the discs are discontinued... there's NOBODY who can replace them.

And that's much of what my library IS! !

I'm sure the US Copyright office & the major publishing offices would love to talk to that clerk!
I agree it should be legal to make a 1:1 backup of your originals.

I've been backing up my CDG recently I feel like it's saves me a lot of money. I used to spend about $300 every 3 months on replacing old discs that got stolen, cracked, scratched and whatever. It was also a hassle sending it back to SOund Choice and Chartbuster for a replacement. Who has the time to keep track of all that.

I can see discs getting stolen on a rare occasion, but I don't understand how one can break/crack/scratch discs that often?? I have discs I purchased in 1993 that are still playing like new. I have probably replaced (well repaired) a total of 15 discs out of 500+ in the 11 years i've been working in karaoke.
Grant you I believe storage is a big part of the discs lives. The original jewel cases are the best way to store discs & this is what I use. Folders tend to scratch discs because you are constantly sliding a disc in & out of a sleeve which all that needs to happen is a little foreign object get lodged in between & this will cause discs to get scratched. Same with those little speed racks. I did try these when they first came out & did have more scratches with these so I dropped them & went back to jewel cases.
It's not a hassle to send a disc back to SC or CB for a replacement. It's a hassle when they offer this service & then people complain about it being a hassle so they drop the service for others that will utilize it if the need arises.

I just recently had my entire collection of disks and half my equiptment stolen out of my car while I was waiting for the club owner to pay me inside. I wish I had backups of everything. So now I use a laptop and keep all of my originals at home. I figure if my $800 laptop gets stolen that's still better and easier to replace than $2500 worth of disks.

78 rpm, 45 rpm, 33 1/2 rpm, 4 track, 8 track, cassette tape, laser cd, digital capable of being stored on hard drive, rom, ram, and easily transmitted in any medium. Rather than spending their resources trying to regulate an obsolete format they should be adapting accordingly and providing a contemporary service to their customers.

I was installing Pioneer and Seeburg jukeboxes when they first came out but it seems like anymore about the time they work out all the bugs somebody has come out with something totally new.
I have the utmost respect for the Kj's I know that seem to keep cd's forever I know one that's run a rsq for i dont know how long and has never cleaned the optics You guys have more patience than i do..
Whatever works and rocks is what counts..

The only thing that I burn is the toast, and I KNOW that I can't be breaking any laws when I do so!
