As i was running my new rack set up last night,i was sitting in front of it,i was sitting on one of those folding chairs from a card table. The chair has a foam seat covered in a type of plastic,i was on a vinyl floor wearing rubber soled tennis shoes in my basement.I was making attempts to sing when all of a sudden i heard a pop, snap crackle crackle crick, zzzt, then silence.
When i awoke from passing out on the floor.... :jk:
I wasn't sure what was going on.After swapping out a few pieces with no luck,i decided to try another channel and voila.I was like, wth is that about.
Well i got the other channel dialed in,i'm attempting again and sure enough,i heard the crackle but this time i jumped up to see if i could shut it down real quick when i felt a little shock from the chair to my leg,it was then that i realized what had happened.
I'm still a little surprised that something like this could happen when all i was doing was holding a mic.Not like i was inside messing with the circuits.
So it looks like i lost the channel on my zed 12fx mixer. Now i'm kind of nervous every time i turn it on,would have thought there would be some kind of protection built in to protect against something like this from happening,i mean static is every where.
Any one ever experience something like this before?

Static Electricity can be a real killer, no so much to people but to electronics.
One static jump to a computer and you could kill it, same goes for other stuff.
People don't realize that if you have carpeted floors and you put one of those plastic sheets that you can roll your chair around on can be very bad when working with computers, essentially you have made a large capacitor and you rolling around in your chair charges it and then ZAP.

Get rid of the vinyl chair also make sure that the ground in your wall plugs are actually grounding.

Sounds like your spike went through the mike to the cable to your mixer. Might be as simple as seeing if there is a protection diode in the z circuit that popped, that is the protection.

Ouch!

I've been in the habit of touching something metal to dissipate static buildup before handling equipment for years. It's almost an unconscious act for me now, except when you get the occasional really big zap. Those HURT!

Great refresher lesson for many of us.

Are all the plugs grounded and is everything that is supposed to have a grounding plug - plugged into the grounded outlet?
No ground lifts to eliminate hum?

all plugs are grounded and plugged into a grounded outlet.I was using a cheapy power strip, ditched that for a more suitable one.
No i don't use ground lifts,i did have some hum as posted earlier but i found i had unbalanced 20 foot mic cables going from eq to amp. When i replaced those with 3 foot xlr's the hum was gone.
A&H said they would replace the mixer,so all is good for now.Still just seemed odd,i've had a karaoke system for 12 years and have never had this happen before.
