I'm looking at portable recorders to record my guitar etc. It would be pretty cool if I could also record myself singing karaoke.

The Sony PCMM10 would seemingly be a good solution for all of it. Anyone have any experience with it?

Have a recommendation for something else instead?

thanks for any input you can provide

First, I think getting a personal recorder like that is a great idea. However, as the the Sony you're looking at, I'd say you have better options in the same or lesser price range. I don't like the microphone on the Sony. Their tiny peizio microphones are completely encased in the recording unit itself and really don't perform well. Sure it's got 96 kHz capability, but what does that matter when you're mics suck, plus you're recording ambiently so how much does it really matter at that point anyway?

For the same price or cheaper I'd recommend you look at the Tascam GT-R1. It has a much better pair of microphones that are better designed for what you're planning to do. It has tons of capability, the only place where it falls behind the Sony is that it only records up to 48 kHz at 24-bit uncompressed. Some things I think you'll really like on the Tascam are the built-in effects, the built in 1/4" Guitar Input jack, key/pitch/speed changers, and the ability to reduce the guitar a recorded track that you're playing along with.

Just some thoughts, take a look and see what you think.

Your lap top. which you already have; all you need is an interface/ preamp and mic
