Hey guys.
My naming convention for files is artist - song - manu.
In Compuhost if the artist is a duo e.g. it can take up a lot of characters.
Sometimes I can not search the song because of the 40 character limit.
Are there any work arounds.
Thanks.

I wasn't aware of any limit. I never seem to have a problem finding, including Lady Marmalade which has a huge artist string.

How does the limit work?

Put it on search as you type, and the songs should be found withih the first 10 characters max.

As an example, I have the file
Meatloaf - Paradise by the dashboard light - Sun.cdg
What Compuhost displays is
Meatloaf - Paradise by the dashboard lig
I can not see who the manu is.
I emailed Compuhost and they replied
"Thats right. There is a 40 character limit"
It does search as I type but only displays 40 characters.

Jerry, instead of adding the song by the add song box, use the song search. This will not only give you the song as you type, but ALL versions that you have, then just drag and drop onto que section. If this is confusing, let me know, I'll explain better.

I believe his problem is that he can't see what version it is due to the 40 character limit. He must have imported into the database using the Artist - Title naming format. If the OP imported using Artist - Title - D-T format I believe he would be able to tell what version was what based on the format he listed in his original post.

Compuhost has excellent song search capabilities, however, in this case, I'm reminded of the adage "Garbage in, Garbage out". That's what you have here. The naming format of your example file does not adhere to any common format that I have ever heard of. If your files were properly named, following any of the common formats that CH supports, you wouldn't have a problem. Instead, you are obviously importing the files using the Combined method, of which CH itself displays a warning message when selecting that format, stating that its search abilities are seriously limited when using that format.

tbreen, you are right.
The trouble is I named my files that way and was happy using them in winamp.
I then moved to Compuhost and have this problem.
It is not possible to rename all the files.
Any ideas please...

wow. that sucks. mine is set up the traditional way. I usually type about 4 to 6 characters and disc number, track number, artist, song name as well as the number of the song being entered. For instance, my first song ever entered is "1" so on and so forth. Only way I know to fix your problem is to manually edit each song from the "Search songlist" window or delete all song titles and start from scratch in fastTracks. There must be an easier way. Good luck.

Unfortunately I am not standing next to you. I could write a Perl script that would rename your files recursively and solve your problem. Unfortunately, there is really no way to get something to you that you could use.

If you could get me a real recursive directory listing, i.e. a text file with all of the file names as they are on the disk, I could write you a batch file that would rename everything.

With luck, you would have the files in a one disk per folder setup. But if you had about anything, I could probably handle it.

I would create something like:
[pre]rename "Chartbuster\CBE3XX\CBE317\CBE317-01 - Beach Boys, The - Good Vibrations.zip" "Good Vibrations - Beach Boys, The - CBE317-01.zip"

If you didn't have numbers and only manufacturers, I would create fake ones like CB0001-01 etc.

Hmmm. Got to think this one through.
I would be renaming my filenames to longer filenames.
Also I would be reversing names e.g.
Aretha Franklin to Franklin, Aretha.
Not really what I wanted.
Time for a big think.

Thanks mckyj57 for the offer

Dude! That's what regex patterns are for! I know they look like line noise, but they sure save a ton of typing.

Perl be da shizzle!

I don't think you understand. I am a Perl programmer and a fairly major one at that. If I had Perl on his machine I could write a script in a few minutes that would rename all his files. But I am not on his machine, and I don't expect him to install Perl.

My Perl script would run on my machine and produce a .bat file he could just run, *without* Perl.

Time for a big think.

It was only an example -- I wouldn't have changed the titles and artists, it would have mirrored what you sent me.

Actually, if you used the DOS prompt and did:

c:
cd \karaoke

Those first two change your directory to wherever the files are. Then:

tree /f /a > output.txt

you could send me the output.txt file and I could do it from that.
