There are several really good softwares out there. I suggest trying all the demos and see which one does what you want it to. Most softwares will allow different types of searches, But I have found that simply typing in partial artist and title will grab what you want as fast if not faster than disc IDs.

Compuhost www.karaokeware.com $180
Hoster www.mtu.com $229
JustKaraoke www.tricerasoft.com $24.95
Karma www.latshawsystems.com $99
PCDJ Karaoki and KJPro www.pcdj.com $99
AutoKDJ www.autoKDJ.com free (front end for winamp)
These are a few of the choices. There are more
Leave the attitude that "just because it costs more means it is the best" behind as some of the better programs cost very little. In fact the two cheapest costing solutions have features the more costly ones do not.

I would also add download the free version of these if you can and try them out.
Sometimes what one person likes may not fit what another person needs or wants.

I think Danny & Lone Wolf answered that inquiry as well and honest as it has ever been answered.
They have given you sound advice...take it and run with it. :D

No one asked you what you are using it for.

If it is for home use, a free or low cost package can be fine. You are mostly looking for a player then.

If you are planning on hosting karaoke gigs, I recommend investing in CompuHost. It will give you a professional look and feel that others don't, and some of its features will pay for themselves in promo value. (Particularly the scrolling marquee promo messages.)

While Compuhost is a good software, I still would not sell JustKaraoke short in the professional department just because it costs less than Compuhost. Besides the marquee can start trouble if you ever deviate from the original order to allow new singers a chance to sing near the end of the night.
Besides JustKaraoke is better if you are going to run a kiosk (Song request station) since it will automatically place the singer's songs into the que freeing up your time to either show newbies how to use the kiosk for the first time or even talking newbies into singing. Which actually is the reason I am going back to JustKaraoke when I replace my laptops which got stolen from my house in January. I am not going to bother loading Compuhost onto the new laptops. I will still have a book for those that want to browse but for requests they are going to have to use the kiosk. The only exception will be if I have to use the kiosk computer for running the show if my main one crashes on me (have yet to have that happen but you never know).

That's not the source of my recommendation. If it did the same thing for less, I would recommend it.

But if you are a karaoke host, this is a piece of software that you are going to be using day in, day out, for a long time. It is your public face. The small amount of monetary difference should not matter -- it would be a false economy.

The promotion features of CompuHost have real value, and there is no equivalent for JustKaraoke. Compuhost's interface is much more polished and better laid out. And has JustKaraoke ever had an update? I bought it, and don't believe I have ever seen an update. Not very good for me, as its key changer is not very good at all. I stopped using it completely because of that.

CompuHost delivers real value. Not fake value. The competition in features and polish is not close. And the gap has widened as they have continued to update Compuhost, all of which updates have been free to me.

They update JustKaraoke all the time. They just recently added the remote server tool. When it first came out it did not have filler music either. My singers hated the scrolling marquee said it was too distracting when singing plus the fact that one does not need it if you are only using one tv.

Never EVER have I had a singer complain about the marquee. Owners love it!

Opinions vary,,,just leave it at that. Let the OP decide what is best for him/her. Both programs (among others) are all good in their own purposes, no need to bicker because of an "opinion".

Agreed. It promotes specials, upcoming events, and even rules. With the new version and rotating messages, it's even better.

If the rotation gets long, I announce about 4 singers and then use the rest for messages.

I have never had anyone complain about the Compuhost scrolling marquee. I HAVE had people compliment the marquee however, as they always know who is coming up next!

Seriously though. Distracted? If those little words at the bottom distract you from the GIANT FONT LYRICS, you probably should see your Doctor about ADD.

Personally, I have only been to two other shows that actually uses Compuhost. One did use the scrolling banner at the bottom, and the other guy didn't have anything going across, only the Compuhost title. I DID find the banner mildly annoying, and I am NOT "ADD" or drunk. I am a perfectly sober, sane and very visually acute person. So, don't go to the "if you are annoyed by little title font when there is larger font, then you must have A.D.D." assumption. It's the movement and bright color difference that is distracting. Not a lot, but is distracting. Dunno if this is an option in Compuhost or not, but if there is a way to choose different colors on the banner, and size, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. I haven't played with it enough to know. I CAN see the benefits of the banner too, scrolling ads, upcoming singers,,,etc, so if the host can alter so it isn't so big and distracting, then it would be cool.

Where are the updates at? I go to the home page and both the key changer and JustKaraoke show 1.0 available for download, same as I bought.

Are any of the programs listed above any good for DJing also? I do as many dances and parties as I do karaoke.

I'm currently using PCDJ FX with a karaoke add in. Personally I really like the program. It gives me 2 players on top to mix music with the karaoke player mid screen, just drag and drop the lyrics window out to the monitor. The only reason I'm looking to change is that it is not compatible with anything past windows XP. I ordered my last laptop with XP, but how much longer will I be able to do that?

I'm not happy with the newer version of PCDJ. You have to minimize the windows back and forth between the DJ and karaoke programs. I want to be able to mix music for dances, create wait lists that can be put on auto play. For the karaoke side, minimum requirements be able to change the tempo and speed for karaoke, input song request, has to use cdg+mp3 format and of course a good search function.

Not really concerned with the program maintaining my rotation list, scrolling marquis, remote kiosk, or remembering the singer's previous songs. Having the ability to play a patron's cd would be a good option.

I had wondered that same thing...it seems they are not assigning a new version # to the updated file, but the changes are in the current download.(referring to Just Karaoke)
