You might be able to find this elsewhere for less...google around.

This does work and was recommended to me by Lonman some time ago.

Plug your laptop power supply into this....Hum Gone!

Static and noise usually comes from bad shielding.
Nothing to do with mains loop.
Does your laptop PSU have an RF shield ( a barrel shaped ferite ) near the DC jack.

if static and noise having nothing to do with the house power supply, then why does my laptop only SOMETIMES need the humX? some house power supplys do not affect my laptop, and some do. when they affect the sound coming out of my speakers, it is obvious and everyone can hear it. the humX corrects it right away. like I said, some house power supplies work well with my system and there is no need for the humX, but about 40% of the time, it is nescessary. that means the house power supply has to have at least something to do with the problem. right?

Yes, it certainly has, although I paid $59.99 a couple of years ago. I thought that the price was outrageous at that ($60), but ordered it anyway, plugged it in and sure enough...hum silence.

Could be a lot of different things. Is your equipment all connected the same way every time? Does that method include having all of the equipment fed from one common power source as I've repeatedly suggested? If not then it could be ground loops that form as a result of the a difference (note difference NOT issue) between the wiring of the outlets you're using at different locations IF you're hearing a hum. If everything is plugged in as I've stated and you do that every time with no additional equipment being added and still see this behavior, then yes it could be an issue with bad wiring in the location your playing. Do you use an electrical tester to check the outlets before you plug in? That could be a useful indicator of what the problem might be.

I'm still with jerry on this, if the problem is Static and Noise, that is not a ground loop. Ground Loop is a term that gets thrown around here an awful lot without any real understanding of what it is. Ground loops cause a steady 60Hz hum (well in the US anyway, I believe there are countries with different A/C operating frequencies) not intermittent static and other noises. Could the HumX device be isolating the equipment from other electrical interference, certainly seems possible. But let's not lump all electrical issues into the ground loop realm because they are quite different and must be addressed in very different ways.

You can still find them for 59.99 at a few places. One of them even said add to cart to see lower price.

yes my equipment is the same everytime. maybe it isn't a ground loop, but it is being caused by the house power supply. I mean call it what you want. it is a hum or buzz caused by SOME house power supplys and not by others, and the humX always fixes it. what is the humX for? if it really is only for ground loops, this is a strange argument. if the humX can fix other things than your arguement makes sense. maybe it is something else.

but, like I said. the problem only occurs SOMETIMES and the humX fixes it EVERYTIME so far....if the sky is blue, it must be blue?

The HumX's primary application is eliminating ground loops. It does so by isolating your equipment from the ground connection by use of a transformer. This isolation could potentially have the unintended but equally useful effect of isolating you from other interference that could be picked up and transmitted over the AC power feed.

The "HUMX" that is being suggested. Is this used directly into the WALL AC ? and the I plug my power strip into that ? or do I use the HUMX in the power strip and plug my laptop into the HUM X ?

If you're going to use a power strip I would plug that into the HUMX and then into the wall.

In theory the HUM X should correct all plugged into the strip?????

That is how I use it...laptop power to HumX and HumX then plugged into powerstrip, however the other way discussed above should work as well.

my humX WILL NOT correct all plugged into the strip. I have to have the laptop plugged into the humX and into the wall straight away. I do not know why. I haven't done much experimenting though, like not using other outlets and only using the strip (I have my external hard drive plugged into another outlet, for instance), and I've only tried it (using power strip to humX) a couple of times. also, it works very well with my laptop, eliminating so much noise I can barely hear any....but there still is a little noise associated with my main amplifier power. when I have the laptop on battery only, and use the humX on the main amplifier (B-52 power supply), there is even LESS noise. so I may buy another one, or try one of the expensive power filters. but the noise is so low I don't know if it's worth it. don't know if they will be as effective as the humX.

http://www.amazon.com/Peripheral-PGLI35 ... 525&sr=8-6

there is also this, but I have it back ordered. at only 12 dollars it is worth a shot? maybe. if I ever get it, I will post a review.

I so know I am going to upset someone here...
I so don't mean to.
I have a theory.
In my hard core gigging days, on the few ocasions I had earth loop hum,
I tried another mains socket until it was gone. 2 min. max.
In a thousand different venues It happened about 5 times.
OK I used to be an electronics engineer which helps.
I mean helps to really understand the dynamics.
I never broke an earth pin or made any sort of ground lift.
My cables were THE most important item I had.
Has any pro / semi pro sound guy here ever had a problem with
ground loop or static ?

I'm not saying I know what the problem is, all I'm saying is the humX fixes it. I really don't care too much what the problem is, as long as I can fix it easily, which the humX does. Maybe some of us don't understand what the problem is, but the humX does make it all go away everytime. Can you explain that? It will be interesting to understand, but your explanation has to include why a (named by ebtech, who makes the humX) ground loop eliminator makes everything allright. It makes the noise, which is loud and resembles a hum, go away.

so, I guess my question is, why does the humX work so consistently and dramatically well if it is not a ground loop problem?

I think that is what some of us, especially me, aren't getting.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in this thread yet, but it appears many times in the forum, but this noise is switch mode PSU switching noise from the laptop supply travelling up the earth line. Any inline filter in the laptop supply should clean it up.

I removed the earth line on my laptop PSU a couple of years ago and it has never occured again. Most laptop PSUs are double insulated anyway.

Just remember to only have the laptop supply on the filter otherwise the noise can still travel to the other common connected units.
