I had an 82 yr old man try to scam me with copied discs. ...sigh... Thankfully, I had done my research last year on buying used discs.

Copied discs will....

Be lighter and thinner than the real deal.

The back of the disc is colored instead of silver.

Look on the back for "memorex", "cdr" or "cdr 80 min".

Manu stamp----look for this but -----I have bought CB discs directly from the CB website and those are not stamped/imprinted/marked but my new SC and KK are. By this, I mean directly onto the back itself, not on the inner ring. The CB disc do have markings on the inner ring.

If the person claims he put a big white label on the disc so he/she can read the titles/artist better, most likely they are copied. Check the label print quality also.

Go through every disc! Meet up at a public location, something like McD's, sit down and make them wait as you go through each disc to check for fakes. Someone with the real thing won't mind if you do that.

Don't be afraid to check craigslist. I have made two large lot buys of original dics for a fourth of the cost of new from there. Just don't let yourself get scammed!

Vicki

While thickness and color are a gimme, many are thick and silver as well. However, most mfr. discs DO have a code on the inner ring, or lasered into the disc somewhere.....

Either way, thanks for the heads up! :D

Chartbuster, as I have previously posted, can be problematic. I purchased discs on ebay that were delivered on discs marked TDK, and which bore no manufacturer's markings on the inner circle. After a direct discussion with CB, it was determined only after I revealed who the seller was, that the discs were legitimate! go figure

I did not realize some could be thicker and silver so I will watch for that. Only the CB stuff has thrown me off so far though. I wished they engraved their discs!

CB does engrave most of their discs. They went through a period where they mass copied their discs instead of pressing them but I think they have gone back to pressing.
I have many CB discs with the disc number on the inner ring and then some that don't.
