Hi all,

I'm finalizing my mixer choice for a home karaoke setup mostly for my wife and friends that come over.

The features I've been interested in are karaoke echo/reverb, mic compression, and to a lesser extent, USB recording.

I've narrowed my search to a few choices:

Mackie ProFX 8 $230

The problem with this one is that it looks as though it will not be available till April, and also has some reported noise issues when USB is used. The noise issues might be fixed in the next batch, but I'd rather not wait till April...

Yamaha mg82cx $160

This one seems like the standard choice around here. It does not have USB out, but that isn't all that important to me.

Behringer x1204usb $180

I don't seem much (or any) discussion on these forums about this mixer. It looks to me to be pretty good and also for a good price. Seems to do everything I want and is available right now. Is there a reason I should not get this one?

Good board, didn't have any USB issues on the model I tested in the GC awhile back.

You get USB but lose the effects section, but could always add an outboard unit for effects or use the computer.

The reason for me not to get it is it's a Behringer. Never had any luck whatsoever in the past with equipment. You may be one of the lucky ones that do.

my buddy is thinking about getting the mackie proFX. are you sure there are no problems with the USB recording function Lonman? people had said there was feedback during a live performance when using USB recording. did you test a newer batch lon, or is it one from last year?

One more to consider, Alesis Multimix 8 USB. Very good mixer, very good vocal effects. I own it and I recommend it highly. About $150. I got mine off ebay for $110, never had a problem with it.

There are a couple listed.

Honestly didn't use it in a recording mode, used it as a sound interface to get the music from the computer - bypassing the computer sound card, but in that mode, I heard no problems. It was last year.

I own the Yamaha MG82CX and the Alesis Multimix 8USB, and I prefer the Yamaha hands down. It has compression built in, which none of the others do. The effects are simple to use and decent-sounding.

Of all the boards mentioned in this thread, the Yamaha is gonna sound the best. Better pre-amps, better overall construction, I'd go with it hands down. The Mackies are really nice too but don't match the quality of the Yamaha. Behringer is only a last resort option in my book. Alesis makes some good stuff, but I don't really care for their consoles, it's certainly not their strong suit.

OT, Did you ever get a chance to work with their X-2 8 buss console. This is what I used in my pro studio for years, killer board - very much a diamond in the rough. 24 channels, each individual replaceable channel strip modules (able to replace a bad one), separate monitor fader on every channel and 2 band eq for the studio/tape return monitors without affecting the main mix, 4 bands fully parametric eq per channel, 48+ power per channel, phase switch per channel, full midi compatible for the entire board settings, built in meter bridge for every output stage, all 8 send/return groups had their own eq and volume adjustablility, and a bunch of other features that I can't think of at this time. Again, a diamond in the rough as far as studio consoles go. It came out around 88 or so originally and priced around 10K new, I paid $8000 when I got it originally in 92 used. Now you can find them for around $1500 when you can, not that it would be good for anything other than stationary pro/home studio work (size of a full desk) but would be one of the only consoles Alesis put that i'd REALLY push at one time. Well hell even today for anyone looking for a killer analog system for full recording studio type boards on a budget.

Good choice I really the the Pre-Amps in my yamaha mixer.
