It’s March 2010 and the summer months are almost here (in the U.S. anyways).
Historically my shows attendance usually picks up once the weather changes.
Kids home from college, people on vacation and an overall feeling that people just prefer to be OUT when the weather is better. That being said….
Where do you see karaoke going in the short term? Do you see the format of the “STANDARD” karaoke show evolving? What changes if any do you think should occur to your favorite karaoke show to make it better?
As they say on American Idol …..the WOW factor !
What is the WOW factor for a karaoke show ?

To answer my own question
For me a wow factor for a karaoke show would be an elevated stage area, some stage lighting and a kickazz sound system. Together with a decent rotation and friendly host and I would be all set. I think if you can give each singer the feeling like they are the MAIN STAR of the show for the few minutes they sing....it could go a long way.

In a "standard" show as you put it, i think you described it well.
For an evolving karaoke show, it would cater to the entire crowd, not just karaoke patrons. In larger places, keeping the majority of customers happy brings in more money and a better overall time for everyone, sans the diehard sing-only people.
Having said that, i would bring in the filler-music, dance music sets, props, crowd-sing-alongs, trivia with giveaways, and have plenty of dedicated screens for the lyrics.

I believe you'll be able to pay a monthly fee to use a karaoke library in real time from a computer.(this is in the future mind you.... )
Karaoke sets will be offered on legal licensed hard drives.
Singers will have microphones inplanted in there voice boxes.....some wireless, and some attachable to a balanced output inplanted in the anal cavity, and they can controll the effects using technology inplanted in thier nipples(twisters)......for some woman, this may be a far reaching event........
Oh, and as much as I can't stand her, H. C. will be elected President.....what does that have to do with karaoke?.....I'm sure something, because she has to put her two cents in everything.......

I've seen the WOW look on a few faces over the years - usually happens a few times for first-time visitors. They find a song they've been looking for FOREVER...it is a version they LOVE...they sing it and wow, the mics are great and the mix is fabulous. The crowd is appreciative, they clap and hoot and holler. These are people who've only ever experienced mediocre shows with a poor song book, cheap mics, a KJ who doesn't know anything about mixing, and an apathetic crowd that doesn't appear to care whether someone is singing or not.
Another WOW: When people who haven't really had much to do with karaoke, and who for some reason come in to a show where someone they know is singing ... they hear a fabulous singer for the first time and ... WAIT! .... It's KARAOKE! They had NO idea what they were missing, all based on some perpetuated myth about all karaoke being krappyoke.
Personal WOW: When someone who finally got the nerve to get up and sing not long ago has begun to develop a style all their own, they are branching out and trying songs that I would have never suggested, and you can recognize the confidence level increasing by leaps and bounds. Big WOW for me in that one.
I guess in my mind the WOW factor is related to expectations that are far exceeded - either the quality of a singer, or how they actually sound on a good system, or how enjoyable they find it to sing a song they've never sung before because everyone lets them KNOW how much they enjoyed it.
It's easy to become accustomed to really excellent singers when they do it every single time they get up on stage - The quality of many of the singers who have frequented my shows over the years is amazing ... and all it takes is someone who has never heard them before coming up to me, shaking my hand, and telling me how much they enjoyed what they say amounts to a free concert ... another wow factor.

I used to have a similar vision, and my rig has been crafted that way. I had a gig at a place with a big raised stage, I had stage lighting, and I was very popular as a host. However, the regulars complained about the lights being too bright so I had to tone it down. Audio was good but the size of a bar that has a stage like that requires more volume, and with Karaoke that doesn't seem to fly. Again the regulars complained so I had to tone it down.
For me, that's what I'd like from Karaoke, the chance to be in the spotlight and be the star for a few minutes. However, I'm finding more and more that very few patrons seem to have that same desire

Well... for better or worse I just invested in a follow spot. I haven't incorporated it into the show yet. I'm thinking that I need to provide some sets of those big sunglasses that will fit over glasses for my "stars"...

Our die hard karaoke crowd brings in die hard karaoke listeners as well. I will not change a thing through the summer months as these are some of our most busy months as the party crowds come in.

Personal WOW factor is when we get actualy local musicians in & hear what we have to offer & decide to sing because of it & realize karaoke is much more than just a bunch of drunks trying to get their groove on!

Well... I use mainly backlighting as blinders for the audience. I also use a blinder for the singers.
Most complain but they keep coming back.
Having spoke to a few afterwards It made them feel like they were on a big show.
They actually like it.
It makes them feel they are getting a band feel.
I use smoke and the stage area is very colourful.
With using a camaflage netting back drop regulars say its a different pub on a saturday night.
But thats what I try to do.
It's not all about the music.

Either of whom would most likely do a better job than the re-tard [strike]we[/strike] you recently elected.
But since we're talking karaoke, not politics, I'll keep my opinion to myself;)

Yeah since the one now is better than the COMPLETE and utter retard "prior"...even though embarrassingly enough I have to say I voted for him twice. Regretted the entire second term, my bad on that one. Made me consider the other way for a change, can't say it's better, but far from worse since it's only first term! You mean the total retard who saved our country from another depression? Yeah...what an idiot!
As for the Karaoke WOW factor, I found that the energy in the room went up dramatically when I added my Chauvet 4-BAR LED Lights. It took the entire feel of my shows to the next level
