The major problem at small gigs is setting up.
I find it can take me much longer to set up, than if I do a large place.

We do the plywood on the pool table at one of our venues too! it works pretty well and protects the table.

I think covering a pool table is conter productive --you are chasing away any profit made from the POOL TABLE and also the PLAYERS who may go somewhere else to play pool. I would think many of the players will not stop in if they know there is karaoke and NOT POOL

The last time I played at the small bar in my area I finally figured how to do it. I setup in the corner with ONE (1) (yes I said one) speaker on a stand fully extended to the ceiling. In front of that I set minimal equip on a small table (laptop and powerd mixer). To the left of my table was the TV/mic stand. I was able to "shoot" the sound over the singer. It worked but it was cramped.

I think this places has a capacity of 40, and they have me or my right hand man hosting there about once every 3 months.
