I use a couple of AKG D5's for the singers.
I have not heard of anyone else using them.
While I like them and prefer them to the SM58's
I get the impression I am on my own.

Right now I am using a Sennheiser Freeport and a Samson Stage series 5H. I want to replace both of them with a dual set. I am actually torn between the AKG set or one of these: http://www.acekaraoke.com/acesonic-uhf- ... ystem.html due to the extra channels but I lose 22 hours of use with it.

Well i just started out in the business but i have the following:

Sennheiser E818 SII

Shure SM58

Whilst using in a very echoey conservatory (practising :)) The Sennheiser wins for me over the shure SM58 everytime!

By the looks of it the Shure is a good mic so im failry happy, the sennheiser just suits me personally.

Not cheap though, have a look on www.preloved.com they seem to be fairly good but if your not in the UK it might be difficult for postage!

Personally I use (3 ea) Sennheiser E835 mics for my shows. But this is what I also own:

5 Behringer XM8500's, they work "ok", not great, but "ok"

1 Wireless Shure SM58, and older VHF model, this one is a terrific mic, I am just too lazy to hook it up,,hehe

1 Audio Technica wireless reference mic, this is is an expensive paper weight, (p.o.s. in my opinion)

1 Radio Shack "thing" that I bought years ago,,,this one just takes up space in the bottom of my extra goodies, it's just an "emergency" mic,,,luckily I have never had that big of an emergency. WHEEEEEWWW.

I would love to add some extra Sennheiser's to my collection. I really love these mics. I have also been toying with the idea of adding the "industry standard" Shure SM58 wired to the mix. My belief is this, the Shures are better for female singers, and the Sennheisers are better for male vocals. So I just might put one of each out on the stands. Another addition would be a wireless headset for myself, just have to "pry" open the wallet open to afford a good one. Dunno if i will actually get one tho. I would if the right "deal" come along on the "right" mic. I just have a hard time justifying getting an expensive mic for my own "vanity"

I have a couple of the Shure headset mics - I use them so my hands are free to do other things while I'm talking. Nice not to have to pick up the mic, say something, put it back down, then get back to entering songs or whatever. Nothing to do with vanity, more to do with practicality. I have pre-amps going on my board and it isn't wanting to support my cordless SM58s or the two headsets so am anxiously awaiting the purchase of a new board next month. I have three corded SM58s for singers, and spares include 2 Audix (which by the way are great for female voices). Extra cords as well. I don't pull the cordless mics out for singers anymore - they're happy with the corded 58s, as am I, almost over the cordless.

I think whether you can go wireless vs wired depends on your venue.
If your "stage" area is situated in a location where no one but the singer is there I would prefer to go all wired. Unfortunatley for me most of the last few venues I hosted at were all on the small side and the "stage" area was very close to the MIXING area and people were always walking up and the CORDS got in the way.

Even though I did my best to tape them down and keep them TIDY anytime a group would come up ...all hell would break lose !!

I mean who wouldn't rather hand out 2 wired SM58's ($200) versus 2 wireless SM58's? ( $800) there really is not benefit.

Too each his own I guess. The hassle of cords is outweighed by the convenience to me every time. I wont be going back to cords except as a backup.

I'm somewhat amazed that others here use these WMS40's for their drunken mics? I'll use my Voco stuff for that I think....

Why would someone NOT use a wired SM58 for their "drunken" mics? Roger Clemons could throw one of these things against a wall and it would still work fine.

I have been using two of them in one of the most "drunken" venues in town for 5 1/2 years without issue. That's a $200.00 investment in mics over the last 550 or so shows. If you use VocoPro mics for your "drunken" singers, I would suspect you are going to spend 8-10 times that much on mics. VALUE and CHEAP do not mean the same thing. I could probably even sell them for about $50-60 each with nothing more than a $6 grill replacement.

You WILL NOT go wrong with wired SM58s. They are THE best mix of high quality AND best value available, PERIOD! If you have heard them and not liked how they sound, then you have the gain structure on you mic channels out of balance!!
