I just added some lighting (finally!) and I have a small question and to ask advice from someone who has had experience with lighting. I am totally lighting "illiterate" when it comes to lighting, actually anything to do with "live" wiring scares the living crap out of me. Anyway, I just bought 1 tee stand and some lights. I bought an American DJ Galaxian 3D (laser light), one Chauvet LED Mushroom, and 2 LED Par38 (will add 2 more next week). All of these are DMX capable, but however, I didn't buy the controller and cables on this run. I plan to just run sound activated for now. So my question is this, how would you suggest that I hook this up (wiring wise) so I am able to turn one light on/off independently of the others. I do plan on getting the DMX controller at a later time, and add more lights to a second tee stand. Would I have to run a power cable to each light separately? or just is it possible to do something different? Any suggestions?

This is what I use and worth consideration, they are rf so line of sight is not an issue.
You might also be able to find them at your Local Home Depot or Lowes for the same or less. (I did after I had ordered these.)

Those are cool, I have never even thought about something like that, they might work like a charm. I will have at least 3 different lighting situations on this tee stand, so what you suggestions just might be the perfect thing. Thanks.

Got to put my new lighting to use over this past weekend,,,and i gotta say,,WOW! I even impressed myself with just what little bit I am using made ALL the difference. The little wireless gadgets that RLC suggested worked like a charm once I figured out where I needed to stand for a good signal. The customers were all "abuzz" over the lights. Now can't wait to do it all over again this week! WOOT WOOT!

Awesome on the lights!! All you need now is a fogger. The perfect rockstar setup!!

I know with mine that first time (each setup) you turn each unit on you have to point the remote directly at the unit, but thereafter you can, at least I can, control them from wherever I am. Kind of funky that way but as long as they work I quit trying to figure out why that little "first time" quirck exists.

Don't dare put a fog machine into play. There are a couple of people with medical issues that come to my show frequently. One with a pacemaker, the other with asthma. I don't want to run the risk. Although I have to agree it would look amazing.

I would suggest not buying a simple on off contoller they are around $100.

I'd pick up a dmx to usb for $60 and use freestyler it's free.

The connecter can be purchased from NLFX.

Do not use fogger. They tend to set off fire alarm as well. I wouldn't get a fogger without some type of laser unit anyways. Lasers look awesome.

If you have to get some type of fogging unit, get a hazer. They are much better for the use.

Totally agree on USB based DMX controller for your laptop/PC. I used Freestyler in the past at the same time with Hoster and didn't have any problems with either one interfering with each other. Make sure you get the DMX cable. I am not sure if the cable is the same as the Mic/speaker cable or not, both have XLR on both ends. Make sure you get a terminator on both ends of the DMX daisy chain. They look like a plug with XLR connection.

One could use a mic cable for very short DMX runs, but it is not advisable due to the high probability of poor signal quality. DMX requires a higher bandwidth cable for trouble-free use. (eg. Gepco DLC244).

Only a single terminator is required, at the output terminal of the last lighting fixture in the daisy chain. The terminator is merely a male XLR plug with 120 ohm, 1/4W resistor soldered across pins 2 & 3.

Used a fogger for 6 months in a small bar. Owner insisted on it being so foggy that it was hard to see the singer from the back. Never set off the alarms. The laser cutting thru the fog was cool however. Just ticked me off when the owner would come around and push the manual button for 15 to 20 seconds without asking.
