Hey all. Hope someone can help me here. Should be pretty easy, I hope. I am looking for some suggestions on how to do a wireless speaker system for outdoor use. I want to use powered speakers, of course. There will be as many as 8 different speakers, so something that has multiple speaker options. I have seen one system, but I didn't think at the time of looking really closely at the equipment. However, it had a "lag" in output sound timing from the main system, is this normal? Or is that something that could be adjusted? If anybody has any experience with wireless receivers/transmitters for speakers, I would be greatly interested in hearing your suggestions. I have a base system for the main power, but want to add "satellite" speakers away from the main system. The distance might be as far as 100 yards, but most likely be closer than 50 yards away from the main system.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Jian, right idea. Two big problems with that one,,,first it is in the wrong frequency, and second it isn't available anymore. But thanks tho, you are on the right track.

It seems to me like any wireless guitar system could be used to run wireless powered speakers.

After all, they are 1/4" or XLR ins/outs on each wireless end, and designed to transmit the audio from the input device (guitar/mixer) to the output device (amp/speaker).

Any reason that wouldn't work?

This may be the kind of thing you are after:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ASTVREC

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ASTXRM

Without researching this further, it looks like you'd have one receiver attached to each satellite speaker.

TopherM's suggestion is a good one too... but would only give a mono signal. You'd still have to have a separate receiver for each speaker. You could of course utilise something like a wireless monitor system, which would enable stereo signals, but would mean running cable between left and right speakers.

In regards to the question about "lag", it is possible that is a design feature to allow for distances between main and satellite speakers. It would be really nice to be able to have the satellite speakers timed to the sound being received from the mains. If using a system that doesn't allow for this, (such as with Topher's suggestion) then one can easily run into the situation of the audience hearing the sound from multiple sources at different times due to the speed of sound and distance of the listener's ear from each speaker.

Topher's suggestion is a possibility. However, it has two drawback. One is the tranmitters are battery powered, and two, I would need one unit for each speaker. The second issue is still not a biggie tho. The mono issue really isn't an issue, because most people at the events will be hearing only one speaker at a time, either directly in front of them, or on one side of the venue itself. There would be the "main" system set up at a mid-point at the event, and all the tranmitting would be done from there.

As far as the "lag' goes, I understand about the speed that sound travels, and the possibility of hearing two points of sound. At the one venue that I attended, I stood approximately halfway between two speakers, and hear sound at two different times, the one closer to the main system was the one that was ahead in time from the speaker that was farther away. My question is here, is this gonna be a normal thing with what I am trying to accomplish? It's not a huge problem, but one that I would like to address.

I know there are other products out there to do what I will be doing, I just don't know what/where to get them. But you are ALL on the right track, and I will look at the suggestiions shown so far. Thanks.

Scott

If you were halfway between the two speakers and they received their signal at the same time, you would hear them at the same time. Therefore, the speaker closer to the main system would have been receiving it's signal ahead of the other speaker for you to hear it first. This would be the case if a delay was set for each satellite speaker dependent on it's distance from the main system (ie, signal delayed so that a person at the position of each satellite speaker would hear the main system speaker and the satellite speaker at the same time).

At 150 yards, and if no delay is set, a person at the satellite speaker would hear the main system approximately 1/4 sec after the satellite speaker (speed of sound at 20 degrees Celcius = 343.599 m/s), and at 50 yards, approx. 1/8 second.

Are there any more suggestions no this subject? I keep looking on google for possibilities, but the only one so far is from "Phonic", but dunno if the wireless system they show is discontinued or just what, can't seem to find any info on their website. And the "contact us" option hasn't payed off yet. Any ideas?

I use wireless guitar systems to run sound out to the patio or as needed for weddings. The body pack goes on my aux out and the reciever goes on the back of a powered speaker.

I use this for my surround sound speakers.

If you haven't purchased the speakers there are many wireless options out there.

I ran really nice EV Zx1's for my Uncle's Deck. I burried the wire in sealed pvc and put the power amp and source in garage.

I think I may have found a couple of options. Both of which are cost friendly. One is from Marketek and the system might only cost around 600 bucks for 1 receiver and 6 transmitters. And the cool thing is this one also has video capabilites! I could add cameras around the park for me to show up on a big projection screen. This would be very cool. And the cameras are even in color! The name of the other brand escapes me at the moment, but also would be affordable, at a total cost of about 470 bucks for the same amount of recievers and transmitters as the other package.

The Phonic brand seems to be a dead end. The company is located in Taiwan and has very poor response time to my questions. Even with multiple requests, they only have answered a small portion of my questions, leaving me some doubt as to their capability to fill an order.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I have looked closely at all of them. Some have let to other paths, so it's bee a very good thing.

I'm puzzled why you would want one receiver and six transmitters? It would seem the reverse would be more useful....
