Where do you get "free" from? He's offering it as added value as an incentive for DJ bookings. It's something I've done often. Rather than take $100-$200 off my regular price, I might offer the prospect "free" lighting or a complimentary hour of cocktail music when they book me as a DJ.

For computer-based DJs, offering karaoke is only a matter of bringing a video monitor and some microphones. They are already paying for your time, travel, speakers, amps, mixers, etc. to play recorded music as a disc jockey.

That's a big difference from soliciting gigs by offering a free show.

It's more than just "a matter of bringing a video monitor and some microphones."

It's a video monitor, monitor stand, video lines and additional power lines (and a rug to cover them), microphones (and cables), "vocal mixer" not just a dry DJ mixer, a number of $10-$15 song selection books, pencils, song slips, specialized software to play the tracks and finally, the VERY expensive song library. You will never recoup the cost of this if you continually give it away.

And yes, they might be paying for your time (as a DJ), your travel, speakers, amps, a mixer (but NOT necessarily a vocal mixer), and your "recorded library for karaoke" is upwards of 5 times the cost of a DJ library. I don't give that all away as an "incentive." I also would NEVER give away an entire show.... If they want to see how I operate, they are welcome to visit me at another established club... which costs them NOTHING and shows them everything they need to see.

There are plenty of people that "add karaoke free" as an "add-on" to their DJ services and yes, I have a problem with that. My KJ library costs many-times more than a DJ library, my equipment cost more... and there's more of it... so there's no way I'm going to minimize its value it by making it a simple "free incentive."

Agencies here try that from time to time with a booking and say; "It's a DJ job, but bring along the karaoke in case they want it."

Well the agent gets stopped in their tracks at that point and reminded that if they book a band, they don't tell the band to do face painting and balloon animals for free on the side do they? If I set up the karaoke, someone's paying for it. It's not a "kiddie-freebie" that I casually throw in.

You're welcome to offer these "free incentives" all you like and your competitors will be forced to do the same... then what do you have left? Free DJ services too?

I don't use a "DJ" mixer I use a Soundcraft mixer that is a great vocal mixer. All my equipment dj/kj comes in the same road cases so it is always there (even the books). I can be karaoke ready in less than 2 minutes after my initial dj setup.
My investment in dj music ai about the same as my Kj music so I am invested period.

OK, OK, OK, there are a couple of accessories to bring. Actually I have 2 consoles, one with a Rane DJ mixer and another with a Behringer mic mixer installed. The rest of the accessories, i.e. mics, cables, songbooks, are already in my rig. I also use a software program (Swift Elite 4) that mixes audio, video and karaoke in the same interface.

Did I mention that karaoke is offered as an incentive only when it will help me close a booking that's over $800? (Often they're corporate events more in the area of $1200.) I believe at those rates, karaoke or no karaoke, I'm getting a fair price for my time, use of my gear and library. That's not "giving anything away" except the use of things I have already paid for. When your gear is in the garage, it's making ZERO.

That's an entirely different story because that's something HE gave away of YOURS without first asking you. He should have called you before the deal was done and asked what you would charge for DJ + Karaoke. Then allowed you to make the choice of whether to accept his negotiated rate or not.

First, no one "forces" anyone to do anything. Every DJ/KJ is entitled to place a "bottom line" value on their time and not accept shows for anything less than that. Are there DJ/KJs who'll provide the same services as I for less than my bottom line? Of course! (Although not with my sparkling personality...LO L)

Read the news? These are tough times! As I said, gear in your garage makes zero. It might well be some DJ/KJs would rather give away the candy store for half my price because they're aout to be evicted. Or their kids are hungry. More power to them.

You always retain the final "right of refusal" on taking gigs. Ultra cheap prospects are not my clients.

I know from my market that there is no telling what any operator is getting paid for a particular gig. But this is what I do know about my market:

1) The same KJ can have different deals with different places
2) Even long established operators have been known to undercut the price of others
3) It doesn't matter how "good" you and your equipment are. And buying a lot of "good" equipment is not going to increase your marketability. I know of SUCCESSFUL multi-riggers who work with the most "basic" equipment, including ONE speaker!
4) Entertainment cost is IMPORTANT to the venue, but shopping KJ prices is SECONDARY to shopping which KJ will bring in the most people every week
5) KJ's lie as to how much of a following they have, but multi-riggers by definition can bring in more people to a new gig!
6) Most mult-riggers are pirates and charge more than I do and I don't work cheap! But remember, they have help to pay and other additional costs as compared to me!
