I've got Anything Box - "Living In Oblivion" It was a homemade loop with added vocals. You can't tell when you listen to it, it sounds very pro.

I'm helping Cueball with his song request. It's gonna sound awesome!

I've always wanted "Why Me" by Planet P. I have an instrumental mix from the CD, but not the time to get it edited down to make it into karaoke. If anyone wanted to spend the money to get it done right, I'd pay half. If anyone is interested, please PM me.

First, I have never had a single request for any of the above.

Strangely, I HAVE had a zillion requests for ( though not ONE hit wonders) The Kingston Trio's M.TA., Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley, and (I think it's them) The Reverend Mr. Black.

Tom Dooley has been put out by a number of co's but as far as I can tell the only version of MTA was MM6328. The disc was mostly Folk Songs from the 60's and has "A Summer Song" which is the only song I've been able to find from Chad & Jeremy.

RE: The Reverend Mr. Black.
You can get any song custom made you know.
Would any of those requesting singers be willing to share the costs with you?
I have a standing policy at my show; if you will pay half, I'll pay the other half. Maybe that would work for you also.

Manobeer, I like your suggestion - The Payolas - Eyes Of A Stranger. Great song. I would totally do that one.

He is a "Two Hit" wonder, but I still would really, really like "Lay around the Shanty (And put a good buzz on)" by Jonathan Edwards.

If that's the second "hit", it got by me. And by all karaoke publishers, who as far as I know only grudgingly published one song by him, Sunshine.

I guess it "got by you then". I'll bet if I played it for you, you would say "Oh...THAT song". In fact it still get's airplay on the radio even today. Especially Friday's @ 5pm.

Remember, just because YOU don't know it, doesn't mean it isn't popular.

In order to be considered a 'hit' it needs to be in the music charts at a certain position for a certain amount of weeks if i'm not mistaken. Not sure how that one faired. Which is why many 'one hit' wonders actually may have more hits with fans than actually charters.

But there are so many charts...

Club hit
Country hit
College hit
CULT hit... made that one up.

And then there maybe songs that have not been any charts but gone gold/platinum/etc... with sales over a long period of time. Do we consider those hits?

I didn't make any such claim. I just said it didn't make him a two-hit wonder. 8-)

I did a bit of research, and discovered that as far as can be seen it has never charted. He remains an official one-hit wonder, wonder that he may still be.

You don't count all the sub charts, it's the main ones.

A lot of bands that are well known have very few "Hits" the greatful dead are a band that did not have a top 20 song until 20 years of being a major music act in 1987 (and only ever got 3 songs total in the top 20).

A lot of the importance of a song 20 years later is staying power, and a lot of well known songs never charted very high. On the other hand many now forgotten songs did peak relatively high on the charts.

The idea of a "Hit" does not mean as much for karaoke as regular music, because it just takes one person (who wants to sing it) obsessed with the song to make it a desired track, not broad market appeal. Not to say that many very popular songs dont have people wanting to sing them.

The more musically connected people are, the more likely that they are going to like songs that are generally obscure to most people. I must say that I recognize very few of the songs mentioned in this thread, but on the other hand I get requests for many obscure songs that I am sure are rarely even considered for karoke by the big companies.

But the manu's generally lok at what is a chart hit as opposed to what is popular oftentimes. Just because it is popular don't necessarily mean it is ggod enough to produce - unles it has enough individual requests i'd imagine.

The charts are based on one thing - SALES. And if the "HOT 100" songs are selling more than all other songs at any given time, aren't they, by definition, the most popular?

Karaoke follows this formula because it is the most consistent indicator of what is going to sell nationwide, on average.

HOWEVER, as KJs and singers, we know that some songs lend themselves to karaoke better than others, and also that about 85% of the stuff the karaoke manus produce is going to fizzle out and die within about 4-6 weeks, never to be heard from again.

Thus is the FICKLE nature of the music industry. HOT 100 one day, singing at the mall the next. And it isn't going to change anytime soon, so get used to it!

You researched it? You have way too much time on your hands.

OK. A one "hit" wonder with one "underground favorite". How's that!

BTW, Stairway to Heaven has been played on the radio over 2.8 million times, yet was never released as a single...hence...not a "chart hit".

I guess all the Karaoke manu's should have "grudgingly" skipped that loser, eh? ;)

Yeah, between running a business, doing karaoke, being a father and husband, and trying to get out and exercise from time to time I definitely do.

Are you suggesting Jonathan Edwards profile approaches that of Led Zeppelin? No of course you aren't. 8-; I suspect you wouldn't even claim "everybody" knows Shanty. And I will claim everybody knows Stairway to Heaven.

The reason I said "grudgingly" is that Sunshine is not one of those tracks that every manufacturer does. Another #4 one-hit-wonder like Ride Captain Ride or Fooled Around And Fell In Love has versions out by everybody.

If you look at the various lists of one-hit wonders, Mr. Edwards is routinely on them. You can call him a two-hit wonder if you want, though some people have gone the other way and expanded the definition to a group which had one monster number one hit and one teeny-tiny top 40 hit.

Things like those lists are all in fun anyway. Of course, you people with too little time on your hands don't have time for that. 8-)

Don't forget your pedantic exercises on the internet.

LOL...of course that's why you said it. Purely a statistical explanation! Since it's not covered by every manu, they MUST have had to grit their teeth and/or had their arms twisted.

Are you suggesting that simply because everyone knows it, it is a "Chart Hit"? No, of course you aren't. 8-;

Since you admittedly have so much time & interest in classifying what exactly qualifies for various airplay nomenclature & karaoke recordings, perhaps you could do some more of your research and contact some manufactures and find out WHY they would go to such trouble recording such a "teeny-tiny" #4 charter such as "Sunshine" in the first place instead of simply assuming they did so "grudgingly". ;)

Of course, how YOU care to classify Shanty or Jonathan Edwards doesn't really mean jack. It still would be a GREAT karaoke song, what with it's party lyrics and bluesy feel. All in good fun, of course.
