I saw the strangest thing tonight… I hit up a local venue tonight to check out their karaoke Thursday. This is a pizza joint right next to a multi screen movie theater.

The equipment: one powered speaker (12” something or other), a lap top, two mics, composite hook up to a projector.

He had a very small binder, maybe 1000 songs listed.

The majority of the “karaoke” he played off of youtube. Youtube! :o I’ve never even searched youtube for “karaoke” but there it was. The original song, with the original singer singing the tune while the lyrics “sort of” played along….

And nobody seemed to mind.

And, they gave away a $50 dollar prize for the best singer; however they decided on this, I didn’t stay.

Strangest thing I’ve ever seen, karaoke wise….

Comments please.

Mark

I use Youtube at home, mostly for obscure or spanish stuff we sing. On the second screen you wouldnt even be able to tell it is youtube cuz I do the searching on my screen and then full screen video on the second once the song is running

I don't see much hope for the business. Too many people getting into it willing to work for peanuts and provide the bare minimum.

If there is a song I want to learn to sing I pull up youtube at home.

What a concept streaming it to a bar. Interesting!

I have been to a house party where that was done. Ok for fun, and easy to do.

BUT to rely on it as a business is very iffy. I noticed that some of the karaoke songs on youtube may disappear suddenly and unpredictably. Pretty hard to keep a song list if you have no control on if the song will actually be there if you need it.

I would presume SC is probably getting thier tracks pulled off of youtube if someone posts them on there.

Every song I saw I'm pull off the web was:

* home-made (maybe a pro video with embedded text the poster put on the video)
* no timed text
* the orginal singer could be heard on each track.

He had no disc's and no hard drive. He did play one Sunfly song while I was there. It was a video song, clouds in the sky, which had the mascot at the start and end of the song. I assume that his book (about 1000) is what is on his lap tops hard drive?

Again, nobody seemed to care about the sound, the set-up or signing wih the original singer on the track.

Is the end near?

There are as many ways to present karaoke as there are venues in which to do it. The assumption that all karaoke shows are viable entertainment is incorrect. As we know there is this horrible theory lurking around that 'Karaoke is Karaoke.' Successful operators KNOW this is NOT the case. A great karaoke show remains one of THE most time tested ways to build a bar business if it is done RIGHT. A smart owner realizes the key components to success - they don't order and buy meat from the shady dude who pulls up with an unrefrigerated truck; they don't buy their veggies out of the recycle bin at the grocery store. They don't hire staff that has gotten fired because they don't do an excellent job. They don't hire krappyoke.

I do a Wednesday show, which started out as a kids' show just once a month and became adults only on the other 3 Wednesdays. Our usual bartenderess is a go-getter, high-energy, attractive, intelligent young woman. This week she was on vacation and the owner worked that night for the first time since I've been there. At the end of the night she said she was in disbelief at the caliber of the talent...that nobody ran out when they found out it was karaoke night, and that people were actually walking in off the street when they heard the singers. Just a great way to end a great night. One owner at a time....

I too learn a new song for myself off of YouTube. And if the video doesn't show the lyrics, I pull them up on a different window. I've even occasionally found just the karaoke version played there.

I'd be laughing my a$$ off if I walked into a place advertising karaoke and it was done this way.

That being said, you gotta give this guy credit for thinking of this. Talk about cutting cost. Plus he did have to do some work to find these 1000 songs.

But whoever said is right. I'll go back to a song to refresh my memory, and it's been removed.

enz, I know you didn't stay, but how bad was the sound doing it this way?

Hey Joe,

The sound was actually better than another venue I checked out; that one had great equipment, loads of songs and two people incapable of mixing anything... All high and mid, no bass wahtsoever....

Anyway, in the end, it must have taken Mr. Youtubeoke 10 minutes to set up (takes me a good hour).

I'd say the over-all sound was a 4 outta 10.

I just can't get over people accepting singing along with the original singer AND having to wait for the pasted over lyrics to switch over from scene to scene. Oh, and no vocal effects..., I think? Maybe a bit of reverb but I couldn't tell.

I'll stick with my pro sound, pro books, and pro attitude. I very much doubt if this guys tip jar gets more than nothing... :!:

You know, aside from the questionable legality concerns, my biggest issue would be the quality of the tracks. You tubes compression rate is sooooooo bad that I can only imagine how awful some of that had to sound. But hey, I guess if someone's paying you to do it and they're happy with the result, why argue.

I think I would have walked up to the guy and said, "I have two words for you, Sing Snap."

Why the hell would you use You Tube?

BTW, both are illegal to rebroadcast.

While it's true that it's illegal to broadcast, or rebroadcast, or whatever, this material... it's an interesting time we live in.

Howard Stern wanted all his material pulled off youtube. Their lawyers told his lawyers sure, flag each offending ( ha ), video and we'll pull each one. Stern's lawyers told them to just pull off any and all material with his image on it which came from the E Channel, Stern TV, Stern released video tapes, etc., and they told him sure, flag each and everyone.....

He gave up...

Yes, very hard to do but there have also been major lawsuits recently against YouTube and some stuff is off. I don't think it will ever happen. I think they would have to try and sue ever poster.

Funny though. Who would have thought that someone would even try to use stuff with someone singing with them.

In a way, he'll skirt the SC issue! :P

Looked at this, don't get it? Do they have proper karaoke or videos with the orginal singer and then pasted on lyrics, they aren't too clear on much. Don't want to sign up to another site, yet again....

The how is he was cheating (assuming you saw he doing this in a non-personal nature).

I signed up with them a good while back.
Not used it in over a year. Forgot about it.
It is free. You can listen to whatever you want.
You can even make a pretty long playlist.
Pay a bit and you dont get adverts.
Artists get paid from their advertising revenue.

Why do these people think you won't save it to hard drive?
