No It isn't "him". It is I and between vocal tracks, karaoke tracks & background music I actually own more than that. I have cases of cd's I have bought. Been buying them for 20 years. Had a hubby killed in an auto accident & spent most of the settlement buying discs. No I don't pirate. Because I knew SC would target me, I stayed legit. My hubby worked for Tower Records for 18 years. I own laser discs, cdg's, neog's, & supercdg's. When the pc goes down I go back to discs without a problem. Never said they were karaoke tracks, you all just assumed they were. I am obsessive about my collections & buy complete sets when possible. I even protect it by putting half elsewhere so if I got broke into or my house burnt down I would still be able to function.

SC sends someone to your show to see if you are using any sc. Once they see the logo displayed, they sue you whether you own it or not. Running under the assumption everyone is a pirate.

They are not doing their due diligence to discover if you do own it or not.

BTW the name is from my dogs. I use to breed yorkies which are small with big hearts so I call them my Bigdogs, just my humor put out there in the name.

Yeah, that's kinda like what I do... buy damaged used vehicles and then go around getting parts off vehicles in bars' carparks (especially the one's with DJ and Karaoke company signwriting on 'em) so I can repair them. Any of you guys missing a few bits? ;)

Not the same thing at all. In Canada, at least, if you own the original disc, you CAN download the same content. It doesn't matter what condition the disc is in....
Remember, the person who sells the damaged disc is the one who can no longer use the content, NOT the new owner.

If you buy a DAMAGED disc, wouldn't that give you the legal right to use DAMAGED tracks only?

IMO it is kinda like buying gear for a weekend gig, with the full intention of returning it on Monday.

It might be legal, but... nevermind.

By that premise, when you buy a new disc and rip the tracks to your computer, Ipod, or whatever, be it karaoke or regular music, when and if your disc becomes damaged in any way, ie: develops skips, should you then immediately erase said tracks from your computer Ipod, or other listening device?
I would think the law would not require it.

When I, buy a new disc... I BACK UP the fully functional tracks off of said disc, and put the original in a safe place to avoid it becoming damaged...

No I doubt the law would/should require you to delete back up tracks if the original disc that you purchased NEW and fully functional becomes damaged, do you really see buying a NON-functional disc and downloading its content off of the internet as being the same thing? laws aside, seriously?

Even so, inadvertent damage can and does sometimes happen.
Laws aside? I thought that's what we were discussing here, so no, I won't put laws aside.

Damaged Discs? Um, I fix 'em to brand new state. Not that expensive anymore:

About half the price I paid a few years ago....

Welcome.

It's amazing how people jumped to conclusions about you. It appears that you are not "rolling over", Bigdog, for SC?

If that is the case, keep us informed about your progress and any strong arm and/or underhanded tactics utilized by SC

And good luck!

If you break or lose an original disc, it would only stand to reason that any copy you made, you couldn't use anymore. You buy another copy, if you can't you are SOL.

Manobeer, aka Manoethics!

Don't you think that it's quite ironic, if not hypocritical, that there are those that deride SC for their "unethical tactics", yet also endorse the aforementioned practice of obtaining a known damaged, secondhand product for the sole purpose of getting a free unblemished copy?

Posted by Lonman when it was learned that Bigdog's website removed the mention of 220000 songs/tracks

Now they are over 200K, with discs? Wow, i've been buying discs for 20 years and am only at 12K, guess I am pretty far behind the times.

I missed the above link during my previous perusals of this thread. And after following the link, I now maybe myself someone who is guilty of jumping to conclusions. Nonetheless, I will.

Some of the statements posted here by Bigdog as to what is included in the total number of tracks that was posted on her website along with her assertion that she used insurance proceeds to expand her library left me a bit skeptical

But the link, getting back to the cached website, intrigued me NOT because there were only 26000 songs back then but because of the clearly stated revelation that her library was on a CAVS system. And while I never found an operator using a CAVS system that was legal, and SC is specifically investigating CAVS operators, I also never ran into a CAVS systems that had anywhere near 220,000 tracks.

Well playing devils advocate here, I don't understand why one would advertise a number then claim it's dj & karaoke combined. That's borderline false advertisement IMO, state your karaoke number then state your dj number. Just my 2 cents.

Who said anything about free?
I was talking about buying ( you know, PAYING for ) damaged discs. At a lesser price, for sure, but paid for nonetheless.
I like Joe's idea of repairing them.
I personally have never gone out of my way to specifically buy damaged discs, but I certainly have bought used ones and some are, in fact, damaged. Not so badly that they won't play, but some have garbled lyrics when they do play. I may just go ahead and buy the machine he suggests. Could be a good little side business as no one here offers that service and I know a LOT of gamers and movie buffs.
As for Bigdog karaoke, has anyone notice that she now states "Our library has over 180,000 songs in it". How is that any different than 220,000? (It's on her about us page)
Just wondering?

And this is a direct question for bigdogkaraoke:

Quote:
Because I knew SC would target me, I stayed legit.

Now why did you know Sound Choice would target you, specifically? What would make you think that?

So you argue that all CAVS operators are illegal? More illegal than your run of the mill laptop and portable HD user? CAVS is the largest digital karaoke business in the world that uses an encryption file system so that songs can not be duplicated. If you upload your discs, this guarantees a one-to-one conversion. Or is your statement based on the fact that many use SC on them, which automatically makes them illegal without the conversion consent from SC? Is it because they offer a song package of 2661 songs for $950 directly from their site?

Just wondering?

Well unless she had EVERY SC disc ever made, that would be 40K songs, SC don't have that many individual songs - maybe combined with every duplicated songs from every series maybe?

My point was that if you are judging the possibility of piracy by the numbers of songs listed, she originally listed 220,000. After the suit, it was listed as 180,000. Still an indicator IMHO. Not that I'm saying she is a pirate, per se, just that as far as that kind of reasoning goes, the "smaller" number is still waaay too large not to warrant further investigation. I'm just sayin'!

If you want the "skinny" regarding "loaded" CAVS systems I suggest you call up Sound Choice directly.

Interestingly,SC erroneously accused an innocent KJ of trademark infringement simply because they OBSERVED a CAVS machine on the premises where he worked!
