as a singer in a band , I used to go to several places each week to sing karaoke , to keep the chops loose try new songs and get different crowd reaction at various places . but , lately I have have been devoted to only one bar. and now I wouldnt DREAM of going to any other . some type of special connection I guess I have with the host and the regulars . And going to another place , I think I would only feel like I was missing something at the regular spot . or maybe it's just guilt ..????

Wow, those are the same thoughts that ran through my mind before I got married. Do I want to commit to just one woman, or if I do will I be missing out on something wonderful from another woman?
If you love the room, the host, the sound, the selection, and perhaps the crowd and the drink prices...why WOULD you go anywhere else?
You are what karaoke hosts work for ... a regular!

It is nice though to stretch your legs a little bit and go see how the other side live. Go to a new venue one night and give it a test drive. If it seems cool, stay a while. If not, go back to your comfort zone.

I actually don't mind when my regulars say they went another place to check it out. Some of my regulars come 3 nights a week - heck I'd want to try something different once in a while. I may tease them and call them traders though. I never want my regulars to feel obligated to come in. I want them to want to come back.

Babs, that's a man's dream.... .
As far as the 'real' subject - I am happy when my regulars wander out to other shows because they always come back to me with a true appreciation for our singer/host relationship. I'm not going to start talking about coming here, Babs, just singing...

Once I have found a place for that particular night, I stick with it and will only go elsewhere if the place I go to doesn't have a show on another night.

I'm a gadfly. I'll go wherever. In fact, so much so that I keep track of where I have been. One day I'll have gone to a karaoke gig in every state....
I am always looking to find a top-notch karaoke place. If I do find a place that is the holy grail, I would go back repeatedly. That would be for me:
* excellent mics
* can hear myself
* sound rocks the house
* host knows their business
* good selection and key changer that works
-- or --
* plays my disks
* no dawdling between singers, no filler music
* not too many singers, and some good ones
* good crowd
* good food
* no smoke problem
Those seem to be hard to find -- fancy that! I only have one show that does most of that most of the time. Oddly enough, it is the one at my service club where I set up the rig, though I don't host it most nights.
I also have to travel miles to get to most of the gigs. Location means a lot.

I tried a new place last night....always on the lookout for a good place to sing....anyway, there were only 4 people in the rotation and the KJ screwed that up. Show was advertised with a starting time of 9PM and the KJ was still hooking things up at 9:45. Song book was very interesting. It seemed to have nothing but SOUND CHOICE tracks(even the hard to get ones) and a handful of DK discs and Pop Hits Monthly discs. The KJ ran off a laptop with no ability to play a customer's CD. The only things missing were the eye patch and the parrot.

The ones we do not go back to and loudly let others not to go there either are the ones where you have more than 5 people waiting to sing and 8 to 10 filler songs are playing cause 5 is not enough for them to even think about deciding to get behind the equipment to put in a karaoke disc. Cause well, they just would rather put in a disc and play music.
Then there are the ones that put in a karaoke disc and then go sit at the bar, not to drink but to sit and talk. Then get upset when the song ends and they have to get up and work.
By the way those are all supposedly legal places.

I think I am mostly a one show kind of Karaoke person too. For the most part I know many of the the regulars at the shows I went to when I was a singer.
For my enjoyment as a singer crowd is 90% of the attraction. The show may have the best equipment, songs and rotation but if the other people in the bar are not the kind of people I feel comfortable with, I probably will not enjoy myself as much as I would elsewhere.
Now as a KJ I occasionally go to other shows to see how I can do things better at my show or find actions to avoid. But I really don't enjoy going to shows as much except when I go there with several other karaoke friends.

If you put your location in your profile, so I know where you are, you'd be surprised -- I just might! I have now met 10 different people from this forum face to face.
In fact, if you or anyone else are in any of:
* Midland, MI
* Wawa, ON
* Timmins, ON
* Alma, QC
* Quebec City
* Dover-Foxcroft, ME
* Bridgton, ME
* Bennington, VT
* Binghamton, NY
* Punxsutawney, PA
* Canton, OH
It might be soon. I leave May 23 for that trip.

the bar I go to there is hardly ever any trouble . the people are great the hostess is stellar , never any filler music . the place is small , but the sound for the size is pretty good . sometimes when there is no one there but maybe 4 of us , it needs to be more quiet anyway . then as more people come in , of course the sound gets louder . the mics are pretty good she'd even let me bring my own mic if I wish but , as long as no one has colds , I usually dont mind using the houes mics . and her list is also excellant . sometimes on a friday night , there can be as many as 30 singers so it CAN get a little crazy waiting , but at that point , as much as I sing , I really dont mind the wait . I just bring my "A" game to the stage .
