Hey All

Many a true word spoken here, and as some of you may or may not know, I have had my share of arguments, same as Luly and Kcultist.

Point is Luly, just have fun here GrL. You will always find some deranged people in this world, and unfortunately on this forum as well.

What a load of hogwash. No-one can hijack a thread  You can start your own yes, but hijack :?: If anyone ever claims that you do that, write it off to insecurity.

Kcultist is no newbie. He's been around a while.

He just went missing for a year or so.

Men in white coats spring to mind!

   oh Luly! Don't let that bad apple mess with you gal! first clue: cult ........second clue: bad attitude.........third clue:the you're all dummies and I know everything raport..........He reminded me of a bad date I had once...lol....

Let me tell u also that when my Momma died it made me do alot of soul searching and made me change alot of things in my life...so I can relate to your reference to that. I love karaoke and consider it good clean fun. There is a bond that forms between us it's true...They can have karaoke in the worst dive ever and you will find the " karaoke pals" all huddled near each other greeting each familiar friend with a hug as they enter and again when they say goodnight... Heck most of us don't even drink....cuz we know we lose our singing abilities when we do...

I sang in a band for a brief stint when I was younger. There was so much smoke on Saturday night, that on Sunday when I tried to sing in church, I had no voice...then there was the jerk who ran the band that told me I could be "A STAR" but he was "THE STAR" emphasis on THE.....then there was my hubby (who has been replaced) hehehe... who danced with all the pretty girls while I was trying to sing...oh I could go on and on...Let it suffice to say it sure wasn't the thrill of my life...and nothing I would aspire to...Did I mention not much pay for the time I put in?

I used to make demos for a couple songwriters in my hometown.(19 years ago)...I wanna say they paid me $5.00 or $10.00 a song....I still have the songs...It's cool to know songs no one else knows, that is a kick....Actually, one of them did get bought and recorded last year finally, but I almost didn't recognize it after all the changes..lol...Fun, none the less. Did I mention not much pay for the time I put in?

I kj part time, part time because it doesn't pay well here in Orlando...My brother gets 2 1/2 times what we get here doing it in a small town in Ohio. So you gotta really love it to do it, or do it 7 times a week to live on it...Did I mention not too much pay for the time I put in?

I sing in church and I sing in my car, my shower, at karaoke, in my head, at my job, all over anytime, and I love to sing...But, did I mention not too much pay for the time I put in? So I long ago decided that this chick sings for FUN :!: ....then theres no hassles, no ego crushes, just lots and lots of fun...BUT

BUT  ....I have been listening to your songs. You are a very talented girl...You have the looks to carry it off as well, so if you aspire to be a professional singer, don't give up your dream...Never give up your dreams, cuz when you give up on your dreams, you're dead.... I could tell by your voice this wasn't your first rodeo....I feel blessed to have tripped over this site where we could share in 24-7 karaoke and listen to great singers like yourself...I, like you, am already hooked on hangin out here....I been spending more time here than yahoo euchre lately, lol..Music makes anyday better....Keep those songs coming dear...I for one am listening....TRAVLIN SOLDIER was magnificent...and yes, u can join us for karaoke anytime...Just let me know when you're in town.... Till then my dear, sing on......... :D

I crew for a guy known by many as Banana Hands since Shallow Hal. I do this free of charge cause he helped me go from a wheel chair to walking even though the Dr's said couldn't be done. Check him out buy his 7 day tapes and take the next step. "There is no greater pain than the pain of regret to have even tried". Anthony Robbins

I went from Wheelchair to walking because I refused to give in - you can too. Good Luck to you! :D

I'm so glad I'm finally getting the experiences and advice I was looking for! Too bad it started out wrong, but now things are looking up.

Connie, is it (headstogether)? I hope that's your name, thank you so much for sharing. I want to go professional, but I'm scared, scared, scared. It took so much and so long for me to finally release the stage fright that strangled me for so long. I'm telling you, I could not sing in front of anyone but my Mom. And she tried so hard for me to show what I had inside. Although she's gone, I know she is (and God) guiding me. How could I have gotten this far without her? She always knew how passionate I am about singing and how this fear had held me for so long.

Although it's really not all that much to brag about, I've won a couple of contests, sung the National Anthem on July 4th here in Miami Springs and appeared in a dinner show. But for me, it's just much more than I could have ever dreamed of. But now I want more.

There are a lot of factors to consider, for sure. I do always want to keep it fun and not see it as a job, I definitely agree with you on that. Maybe I'll just end up being Karaoke Queen here in town! Who knows....

Swampy, I'm so glad to hear of your recovery. That is just amazing. How do I get this 7 day tape?

I think you should always follow your dreams especially the most challenging ones. You were talking about maybe being to old to get started and I don't know how old you are, but you don't look too old........anyway, if you want some advice from someone who has been there done that then pay attention. It may be too late for you now but if you never try you'll never know.

As you get older you'll learn that it's not the stars you reached for and didn't catch that make you a failure...it's the ones you just let fly past.

There 's really nothing to be scared of. What's the worst that could happen???? You don't make it??? Then you're no worse off than you are right now....but with some great stories to tell your grandchildren

Good luck to you

Hi wannabe, that should be my name! Well, I'm not gonna let on how old I am, but I think a lot of people would be surprised. People always think I'm 10-15 years younger than what I am. Could be the Victoria Principal products I use!

Thank you for the good advice. To me, stability is a big factor. What if I were offered a recording contract and I left my job (one I've been at for many, many years) to pursue something that may not pan out? It's such a risk, and yeah, I know, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Of course, I don't have that much to worry about now, cuz no one's knocking yet!

Guess I'll worry about it if/when it happens... :?

Luly.
One thing is for sure. Aim for second best and that's what you'll get.
I've been a professional entertainer for 30 years and I don't regret one second of it.
I never acheived my goals but I enjoyed trying and I've always made a living out of it at the same time.
Go for gold and if you don't get there at least you can say you tried!

Best wishes in the world,

Barry

Hi Barry,

Please tell me what got you into the entertainment business. Your experiences, good and bad, etc. I'd love to know more.

Thanks,
Luly

Luly, I did just what you seem to be wanting to!

I started out in karaoke about 9 years ago, realised I could actually sing and had a go at the competitions (never won any tho!)

Anyway, I finally got up the courage, and with some borrowed equipment, I went out and did my first professional gig. I was shaking the whole time but the feeling of acheivement at the end was unbelievable.

I sing professionally with my partner now 2 or 3 nights a week, we cover pubs, clubs, public and private functions, birthdays and yes, weddings too ;o)

(Personally I LOVE doing weddings, everyone's always up for a laugh and it's always a great fun night... I have a GREAT time being a Wedding Singer ;))

I never aspired to any more than I have now, I'd never make the "big time", I started far too late for that, but I'm doing what I always wanted to do, and I'm getting paid to do it!!!!!

My advice to you is make your contacts at karaoke and competitions. You'd be surprised at the people that go there. Also, get your tracks together. You need a fair variety, and work on about 20 songs to cover an hour. Try talking to your local licensees and KJs, you might be able to borrow gear to get started, or maybe get put onto somewhere you can get a good cheap deal.

And keep at it! When you start doing gigs, don't worry about the places where no-one pays any attention to you whatsoever, it happens. Just remember, you'll never please EVERYONE...

Very best of luck to you!!!

I could not agree with that more. A year ago, I went to a karaoke show by myself when my BF was out of town. It was the first time I went there, and I still was not a really good singer.

The host there was the one that owned the studio I record at (well, her fiancee is an Engineer there, and their friends own it), but after hearing me sing a couple of songs, she handed me a sheet telling me about this studio that she records at and that she would like me to come and make some demos. I was so pumped!

So, karaoke is a good place to go. You never ever know who you will meet, and the contests are even better. I entered one a few months ago, and the top 10 in that contest get to sing at the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, Alberta after the last act on the main stage. Can you imagine the exposure (People like Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Alan Jackson sing at Big Valley). I never made the top 10, but came close, and know I have a good chance next year.

Hi Krystle, I agree that the more exposure the better, that's why I've been entering contests. Unfortunately, sometimes they say they will give you this or that and they don't live up to what they promised. Last contest I won they promised hotel and airfare paid to Laughlin, Nevada for the nationals, but turns out someone made an error in advertising and I'd have to pay my way. No dice. I'm sticking to stuff where I don't have to shell out money out of my pocket, or at least not much. Anything else seems like a scam to me.

Luly, that sux! I would be ticked if they advertised paid expenses and then you had to pay your own way.

I guess I just have to remember that up here in Edmonton, we are pretty small. Most of the karaoke contests that I know are done my Mr. Entertainment. I know they are all legit contests/legit advertising becuase half of my friends all work for Mr. Entertainment. I talk with them all the time. I even tried to get a job as a KJ with them, so I know the owners of Mr. Entertaiment pretty well too. So, I know their stuff is legit.

Also, communities are all very small here, so if there are any scams from any companies other than Mr. Entertainment that does that, then everyone will hear about it. (you have to remember that Edmonton and its surrounding communities (within 40 km of Edmonton) are proabably around 200,000 people. We are very small :)

I can't imagine what kind of contests places like Miami, or Los Angeles would have. Here, our contests are like "Win $500.00 and some recording time at so and so's studio" nothing too big. Another one I am in is put on by Northlands Park, and the winner of that gets to sing at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, and that is about it :) Nothing like Win a trip to Nevada to sing. That would be cool though :)

All you can do is sing everywhere you can, competitions or not. No exposure is bad exposure, I say. I am sure something good will happen for you :) Just keep your hopes up!

hi, i for one have been around just a tad....and Luly ur very smart NOT to pay a dime....i've only sang at like 2 r 3 karaoke clubs...it was fun...intersting to say the least...lol...

Luly, u said u don't want IT to become a job.....hun if u want to make IT...it WILL become a job....i'm NOT trying to rain on ur parade buttttt, you have to ask urself, what r the odds of you making it....Then go from there....
You have a really great voice and ur pretty, that goes a long way...but not all the way....and bad as i hate to say it that jerk was kinda right...you do need to be able to write ur on songs these days.... (r co-write )... for me personally i found out long ago that altho i can sing fairly well, theres someone across the street that can sing better,
you said you won some contest...that in it self tells you that you do have appeal...
did you ever watch that show on t v, called nashville star?....if it comes around again you should try out....no age limit...you would go far i believe....plus great exposer....
i'm betting for every one person that so called (MAKES IT)... because today ur here today gone tomorrow....there r 10,000 that don't...and the ones that did make it i'm betting were turned down by every label out there....but they kept at it. and seen there dream come true....

the music business NOTE the word BUSINESS , will turn what you love to do now into a JOB....( THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER)....

having said all that....you do have the voice and the looks, i would say go for it as far as it will take you....BUT DON'T PAY A PENNY OUT.....

i have a friend who signed with a major label...she sang gospel but went to rock....shes very good......they set her up in a 5 star hotel in CA. gave her only the best.... and her first project would cost them a cool million in recording and promotions.....she has recorded sense i last heard form her....and the song did fairly well....but not enough to off set the mill they spent on her....so now shes at home waiting for the phone to ring so i hear....after it was all said and done and after expenses she got a very nice hotel room out of the deal....but she saw her dream come true....was that enough for her...not sure...where do you go from there? find another dream i guess.....
hope this helps...because it was only meant to help NOT turn you away from ur dream....

I DO FEEL YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE....... IF THAT IS TRULY WHAT YOU WANT.... THE END....lol
