Great River Days. This is my hometown's (Muscatine, Iowa) summer celebration of our heritage. Our town is known as the "Watermelon Capital of the World" (yummy melons!) and "Pearl City" for our long history of making pearl buttons. We have a 5 day event (Wednesday thru Sunday) each year (Mississippi river town), used to be mid August but has been changed to mid July since new sponsors took over last year. In the past, have had carnivals, fireworks, arts and crafts, local and national bands, boat races and rides, 5K events, etc etc.

iI sent an email to the new sponsors volunteering my "expertise" and time to do a Karaoke contest. In a nutshell I was told if I take care of everything for it and can do it on Saturday from 1 to 4, they will consider it.

How the heck do I squeeze a contest into 3 hours? Please help me. This will give me more experience and a stronger resume. Our town is "famous" for nothing to do for the kids. I just did CAPE (carnival after prom extravaganza from midnight to 4 last Saturday) for our youth and I would love to give them something else to do this summer other than the lame carnival. (Over 400 kids had a blast by the way)

I am open to the 3 hour time frame, or any other ideas I can present and maybe get more time. Think outside the box, even if it's prelims on Weddy, Thursday, Friday,,, etc. Who knows what they will say.

By the way, I just won my appeal with Canadian immigration and can reapply for residency despite my DUI in November of "08". I hope to be moving to the GTA within a year and make the big bucks like you guys!

Limit the first round to 30 seconds of "actual singing", either a capello, or to a karaoke track(which would be a bit longer). Pick ten or so, who would sing their song of choice in it's entirity) for the finals . Have a limit of 4 mins or less for any song choice.

That just can't be true!!!......Green River Utah is the watermelon capitol of the world!!! lol Oh, wait,,,so is Oklahoma,,,and someplace in Georgia,,,uh, i'm soooo confused!! :? :rotflmao:

Actually sounds like a blast Rip,,,,hope it all goes well for ya.. And I am leaning in agreement with nobodyhome and say, limit the length of song, and also keep the auditioning time SHORT. Once you have narrowed it down to about 8-10 entrants, then you could actually do a short, abbreviated contest in about less than an hour or so. Good luck!![/quote]

This from Wikipedia "Muscatine's slogan, "Pearl of the Mississippi," refers to the days when pearl button manufacturing by the McKee Button Company was a significant economic contributor. In 1915, Weber & Sons Button Co., Inc. was the world's largest producer of fancy freshwater pearl buttons. From that time forward, Muscatine was known as "The Pearl Button Capital of the World". Weber is still manufacturing today, and celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2004. Next to the mother of pearl button history, Muscatine is nearly as well known as the "Watermelon Capital of the World".[citation needed]

Muscatine was hit by an EF3 (Enhanced Fujita Scale 3) tornado on the afternoon of June 1, 2007, which destroyed or damaged wide areas of the city"

I met someone in DC about 15 years ago, when I told him where I was from, he said "oh, Watermelon Capitol of the World. Our "island" grows the juiciest! Our fruit stands are pretty famous around here.

Thanks guys for the suggestions!

My only recommendation is that if you drink, don't drive--do the watermelon crawl.
