I might start buying their discs again, but doubtful. Just in case I have downloaded the complaint and will save it if any my local kjs are ever approached.
From the Ohio complaint.
SC LEGAL REPRESENTATION wrote: 21. Slep-Tone only sells its recordings in CD+G format. Slep-Tone authorizes its customers to “format shift” and transfer the contents of a genuine SOUND CHOICE CD+G recording to a single computer or MP3 player, provided that the customer keeps the original copy of the CD+G in his possession as an archival copy that is not used.

Just to be clear--and this is taken from other statements by SC elsewhere--they don't have the right to "legalize" playing their songs via computer as there is no such license yet. However, THEY won't ask for damages if you prove to be 1:1.
However, it appears that the fact that you are using a computer gives them an opening to check if you are 1:1 as it still isn't legal.
The other thing they stress is, while they say THEY won't come after you, they can't speak for the original copyright holders. It is just being presumed that if you are 1:1 then there is no monetary loss so it wouldn't be a worthwhile suit. They also say they can't speak for the other manufacturers.

Now who here doesn't have a 1 to 2 ratio, so that in case of a crash, the show can go on??????....... ........and your months of hard work......don't have to be re-lived.......

And how is SC or any other Manufacturer (for that matter) going to know that you have a 2nd (back-up) hard drive to go with your Original CDGs? Are you bringing that 2nd Hard Drive with you to every show and displaying it where everyone can see it? It may be common sense to back up your files on a 2nd hard drive, but now let's see someone prove that you have that. They would need a supeona (sp?) to search your home for something like that.

Unless you are doing shows in two different places on the same night, what would be the reason to even suspect?

I don't since I run 100% disc and do regular disk cleaning and if a disc should fail I can get it replaced from the manus for nominal fee. Beats having the laptop crash.
This works for me a will for as long as i see fit. I don't even do 1:1.
Just my 2cents.

You know, I actually admire your actions. You stay "true" to what karaoke was and is supposed to be. And to stick with using discs. Although laptops are easier and able to play songs without errors, they do break down eventually. Discs wear out, scratch, etc,,,but if you are willing to keep using them, my hat is off to you! That is the ONLY way to stay totally on the up-and-up legally. Nobody will EVER say to you ,,,, "are you legal"

We have discs up to 20 years old still playing fine. In fact in 20 years we replaced the KJTools last year. Two songs , one on two different discs had problems with skipping. With the price of the new tools we decided to replace the whole set and sold the used discs. Even if 10-20 discs were damaged it would not effect the show ,if for some reason they couldn't be replaced.

but are the KJ Tools discs technically "legal" ? I heard that they were a mish mash of many manufacturer's tracks. There seems to be a very fine line when it comes to karaoke tracks being licensed legally or not. Just because you bought it at a reputable store doesn't mean the discs were produced "legally". Some people have original copies of the Eagles Sound Choice disc. What if Don Henley decided to file a law suit against you if he found out that you were using it in public? Is ignorance an excuse in this scenario? I think that everyone in the karaoke world knows that Don Henley's people stopped Sound Choice from selling that particular disc so is using it a crime?

Which is what you do not understand about lawsuits. They were sued and the money (as with most copyright cases) pay damages to the Complainant and the royalties. They do this to cover those who were unfortunate to buy the offending copyright item. Otherwise there would be thousands plus lawsuits to get every individual who bought one. There has music in movies that were not authorized. They Plaintiff sued and got a piece of the action which also covered copies of the movie sold.

Thanks mrscott!
I can run a show as fast and with just as much ease as the next guy and when there are mistakes or errors with disks or me (oh yes I have been known to load the wrong disk or cue the wrong song), the singers and the spectators love it cause I make fun of my errors and can usually get a laugh out of someone and the show goes on! Thats entertainment! Never boring bla bla bla.

KJ tools was made from "remastered" audio tracks swiped from Pioneer and Music Maestro.... The makers were sued by Pioneer and if you look at them, they have no origin on them at all.... no "made by" anywhere... they were the equivilant of a jewelry store "smash 'n grab" kind of theft...
