Blue makes some amazing microphones for sure. They make one called the Blue Ball which is very good mic. However, it's not durable- one drop to the floor and it's finished. It's better suited for studio use. The mic you posted, i'm not familiar with, but if it goes with the company's reputation for building good "sounding" mics, then it's a winner. Dunno about anything else about it. Sorry, i'm not much help.

Yeah, actually, that is a help. I've never used any of the "blue" mics... nor known anyone who has. So, if you're familiar at all with the brand name, that's more than I know:)

Not for studio or home use, it's for live use. My SM58 is still around, but it has just seen better days, and I'd like to replace it with something different. (and don't really want to end up with 5 new mics because I'm trying them out one by one) New stuff is fun, but can be scary when you buy blindly.

If you have been happy with the Shure SM58, I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with another one. Other good mics are the Sennheiser E835 and E845's. They won't break the bank either. In my opinion, the Sennheisers are better for male vocals, and the Shures are better for female vocals..but both are good for either, just one is better at each than the other. The Blue mics are supposed to be amazing studio mics, but work very well for live as well, just be careful with them, they are pricey little devils. The one you posted wasn't a bad price tho. Good luck.

Blue in general (as stated) makes some pretty good studio mics. While I've used a number of their baby bottle condensers I've not had the opportunity to use the enCORE series yet. I did read a well written review of the enCORE series last fall on the plane back from London. The reviews were pretty good although they did like 300 Condenser better. I don't think you'd be unhappy with the 200.

That said I'm also with Mr Scott in that I don't know this would be much if any of an upgrade over the SM58. Especially for live mobile use, the SM58 is probably the most durable thing on the market. I've seen demonstrations where it's been used to drive a 16 penny nail into a 2x4, dropped in a bucket of water, run over by a front-end loader and dropped from a 8th floor window. After each, even though it looked terrible, once plugged back in, it still worked fine. Unless you're really unhappy with the SM58 I can't see any reason to make a switch. Again I haven't used this new series of Blue mics, but the "active" technology the employ alone makes me worry about their resiliency if they're treated with anything less than due care.

If your 58 works and looks okay other than the windscreen, you can buy a replacement windscreen for a few bucks.

I'm sure it's a great mic I just bought this EV which is made my Blue and I can tell you, they sure make some great mics

To be honest, there's a lot of better mics than the sm58, beside it's durability it's not ageing very well I had one and sold it, it didn't compare to my Senn e845 and have friends who experience the same thing, they all ended up selling them or just not using it anymore! But, mind you I'm no KJ so it probably has it's place in this world but for the same price or for less, EV & Senn are by far superior in my opinion and others opinions if you do a search on google

I agree, the SM58 sucks compared to many modern mics at a similar price. But it's an industry-standard. I finally had to buy some for bands after two years of dragging my feet on it.

Well, I'm hearing everywhere that they are great for recording/studio use, but haven't found a lot of info about live use with them.

It's only $150, I think I'll give it a shot and then I'll know.

As to my SM58... I got it, and a SM57, I think it was 1998. (bought them on a trip to california, which was about that year) I'm not sure what the issue is, but it just doesn't seem to have the output it used to. Or maybe it does, and now that I've tried out other mics, I just find it lacking. (?) I don't know. But, I even have a set of cheaper mics, Sampson, they're a copy of SM58... and they are quite a bit louder and clearer than my SM58. And I've tried 2 other mics of friends, (Senn and a Audix I think they were) and there was quite a huge difference.

Ok, well, thanks for your advice. I'm going to shop a bit more, based on your comments, before making a purchase. I'll get the Blue, but I think I'll get one more also.

I've been using the same SM58 for 6+ years for about 15 continuous hours a week. It is an above-average microphone that will last forever. At the $79.00 I bought mine for, that is about $0.12 a show so far (wow, I've done about 675 shows!!). That is as good as it gets in terms of reliability.

The only complaint I would have with the SM58 is it is certainly a "proximity" type mic. If you don't sing with it within 2-3 inches of your mouth, it doesn't sound very good. This certainly comes into play with those wacky signers who think they are Celine Dion and need to pull the mic back and forth.

BUT, for anyone that used the mic correctly, I really don't know how you can beat the overall package of quality and reliability of the SM58.

The SM58 was never claimed to be nor never has been and will never be a top of the line microphone. The reasons you see tons of them in every production company's mic kit are: 1. They're a solid performer audio wise for the price range, so you can get a bunch of good mics for a relatively small price. 2. Their durability is unmatched by anything else out there. 3. The proximity effect of the SM58 is something many audio engineers actually use to their advantage and many singers have learned to manipulate it as well for effect.

There are definitely better options out there in terms of overall fidelity and those options are moving more and more in-line with the 58's price range. Durability and reputation along with solid audio performance continue to make the 58 an industry standard at this point.

Ok, so maybe I'll just buy a new SM58 and the Blue mic I want, that's not going to cost much.

Though I'm sure I'd look much cooler singing on the one Micky posted a pic of.. .. I'll have to check the price on that one, out of curiosity.

Make sure to go through Shure - sending in your old one, that way you know in fact it's genuine, and will cost you about half for a brand new mic
