Hmmmm....lot of movies with karaoke scenes.

Duets
When Harry Met Sally
The Cable Guy
Shrek
My Best Friend's Wedding
Bridget Jones' Diary

That's just off the top of my head....do a google search and I bet there are 100s. I guess karaoke made the mainstream in 1989 with When Harry Met Sally.

The KIAA site states that karaoke was a $10,000,000,000.00 industry in 2009. By comparison, Forbes states that Major League Baseball had $6.8 billion in gross revenues in 2009. I'd say we (karaoke) entertained more people than MLB in 2009.

Who knew this was an overnight sensation. Thanks Sex and the City 2!

Good list, Topher. I believe I mentioned all of those in a previous blog post of mine:

I did a lot of googling to get that last post. :D

I do not believe that it was ever that high of a $$ amount. If it was, the record comapnies most likely WOULD be producing karaoke versions with the original artists.

I think the KIAA is playing the semantics game, and that is me giving them the benefit of the doubt(refraining from calling them liars).

Karaoke "INDUSTRY" vs "MLB gross REVENUES"

So worldwide any money that revolves around karaoke... Yeah it might be that high.

My fave karaoke sequences are in "500 Days of Summer", just because they are songs I like.

That number is not high if it include world wide production, secondary and associated service related to the karaoke industry.

note: Few people outside of the North American continent knows about MLB; but karaoke is worldwide.

I'm not so sure we would agree with you. Movie writers can create any hype they wish, but that does not necessarily make what they're saying so. Movies are a very effective tool for creating and adjusting public opinion, so one can leave the movies with a hyperinflated sense of what's actually going on.

Our experience as a retailer in karaoke equipment tells us that the large stores are hesitant to stock much of what they claim to carry, and when they do it's in select stores in select areas of select cities.

Karaoke remains a niche market, because good karaoke products are simply not available in most areas. Sure, you can walk into a department store and purchase a "karaoke machine" for $139.00, and this is like buying your kid his first telescope at a toy store. One evening with that toy and he'll lose all interest in star gazing. Same goes for karaoke. There's a lot of junk out there. Mainstream junk, if you will. A low-fidelity box with a microphone and they call it "karaoke."

If you'll click on our "WWW" link below this message, you'll be taken to our KG Karaoke website, where we don't sell mainstream junk. Our customers know karaoke and know what they want. These are affluent people, many of whom live far outside the major cities, having been raised in a karaoke culture - such as our Vietnamese, Chinese, laotian, and Cambodean clientel have. They wouldn't touch department store karaoke even if they'd otherwise need to order online, and that's exactly why we're here.

Karaoke is mainstream? Only in the movies.

Most of us here don't touch VocoPro either for 'pro' karaoke. Plugging your site in the manner that you keep doing in every post is becoming borderline spam! If you want to advertise your business, please become a paid advertiser.
