I have just started in the business and I am getting calls to do parties and things already but I have not been able to purchase much equipment. I do not want to turn these jobs down, so I am looking to purchase some equipment to get started. What does everyone think of this: [urlhttp://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-UB2442FX-Harbinger-APS15-PA-Package?sku=631031[/url]

Again, I have to purchase something soon. I do not have a lot of capital or this would not even be a question. Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts.

Well I own the speakers/stands/mics...

Speakers=
BIG
HEAVY
Not really very loud
But they are cheap and seem reliable if not pushed beyond their limits. I added a sub and it has helped big time. If I ever start doing more gigs(doing my second Sat night), these will become my back up tops at best.

Mics=good solid value, very durable and they get no complaints at all... cables that come with package will only last a few outings. Stands do the job, and these speakers are heavy.

As for the mixer, Behringer is not considered the greatest to begin with and that specific board seems to get average to negative reviews.

If you really need some lower priced gear, buy the package in the link below(this weekend using 10% memorial day coupon)... sell the1202fx mixer that comes with the package and buy the Behringer XENYX X1222USB. That would put you below the $600 mark that you linked to above, but with a much better board(IMO). And add a decent sub ASAP.

Or get a used B52 Matrix on craigslist(around $500) and decent Mixer, which would put you around $700 and no need to add a sub for a while.

If you need something now, that will certainly work. It will not sound great, and the speakers do tend to distort when any kind of volume is applied and not real full sounding, kind of bass lacking & on the tinny side. That mixer I actually owned, channels & effects died within a year. Just expect to want to spend more money to replace everything or most everything within a year or sooner.

Aside from Karaoke, I sind lead in a band and when I joined up they had these speakers for their PA. I was seriously unimpressed. "Gutless" is the word that comes to mind.

i appreciate all the input...i think im gonna stick to my original plan and get the mackie mixer ive been looking at. still gonna have to get cheaper speakers for the time being, but if they dont last long thats fine as long as they make me enough money to replace them.

Craigslist...many excellent deals available there but it requires constant diligence. I picked up a pair of Mackie SM450s for $400, with stands and cables off CL. The deals are there.

Or go to your local music store and buy rentals.

I had one of those also. I lent it to a friend a few months ago, and I don't really care when he gives it back. It definitely has its share of problems, though it sounds like Lonman's was a bit worse.

It shouldn't be terribly expensive to rent the PA equipment you need for karaoke. If you aren't charging enough for private parties to rent the PA, then your rate is already far too low.

speaking of that...i know that what the company i was working for was charging was pretty low...i also realize that a lot of folks wont want to answer this and thats understandable, but what do some of you guys charge? is it hourly? just depends on the scenario or do you have a strict pricing schedule that you stick by? again, i understand if you dont wish to answer...

I shoot for $200, but won't do a show under $150 - unless they want to give multiple shows back to back, then I will give some discount per night. Around here, $150 is pretty much high end anymore for club work.
