If you could no longer run your shows from your laptop/computer, would you go back to using disks?

I could do it and not skip a beat. However, I would need a very large table to hold all the discs,,,haha. Good thing this will never happen.

Or do what we do and put the discs in cases and use the cases as table tops. Roll in/roll out, no lifting.

I did it before - I could do it again. I'd be rusty at it at first, but I'm sure it would come back to me quickly. I really think flipping discs is an art form and have great respect for people who still do it smoothly. :D

I am still disc-only, and to make it worse, I've added 5 cases of LaserDiscs -- all hauled in and out for each show (currently 3 a week).

Could do, wouldn't want to! I would just add a second cdg player so I could be constantly cued up and ready to go. I would have less time to talk to / work the crowd and also less time to enjoy the fringe benefits of running a show.

Of course if it suddenly increased the value of my show then I may just overcome my lack of 'buzz' and 'facetime' (thanks to Apple for giving that phrase new meaning today)

Hey guys,
are we not at yet another industrial revolution here.
We can do things so much better but we have to fight to do it.
Things have not really changed that much have they.

Never understood that reasoning? When I ran discs I had just as much walking around the audience as I do with a computer - maybe 5 seconds between songs to get the next disc cued & ready.
With two players, it isn't hard, cue up disc, get singer up, push play, put old disc away, get next disc cued up while pulling the disc after - go mingle. With an organized system, it's not time consuming.

Lonman, exactly. You use a file system that you know and putting on a disc ain't that difficult. Heck you can have the next couple of singers discs on deck. As for bringing them in? I suspect most professionals have dollies or carts to bring in the equipment, so it's an extra trip (if they're in the large wallets) or in our case three trips by cart for the cases which double as work tops.

I never considered "flipping " discs an art form but thanks for the compliment. It is the only way I do it and it does take a little extra time management skill. And i am doing it at least three night a week now (some weeks 4-5 nights). Usually there is no more than a 30 delay between singers except for the one that has to find an ash tray or come all the way from the back of the bar after waiting for the beer he/she justed ordered. That is where the filler music really helps.

It's those 5 seconds that add up to a whole five minutes over the night!! I do have my iPhone (other smart phones are available  ) set up with air mouse pro so that I can actually start the next song whilst running back to the rig!

Okay, alright, you got me... it's really about me being lazy!!!

Probably no fair for me to have answered--we ARE disc. But I don't see that lasting with the disc and disc player quality getting iffier and iffier.

Don't get that. The new players, being multimedia, take longer to queu up because they are choosing which media has been loaded. However, using 2 players, after loading the first, load the second to the track and hit pause. When you hit play again it starts immediately- repeat with player one. The only slow load is the first disc of the night...

Or the main problem is when someone asks to change songs as they are walking up - which I have no problem with either way, again with a well organized system, you can grab the disc & have it re-cued in less than 30 seconds (i've seen hosts bs between songs that took longer than that), even with a slow loader player. Computer is much more convenient in this situation.

Do they make karaoke juke boxes? You know - that hold 5,000 discs. You just type in the disc and track numbers and it puts it in order. That's one way to go back to the cave!

I doubt the industry will take a big step backward. Like it or not, computers are here to stay. They put copy protection on VHS tapes and CD's. They can do it on CDG's. Although someone will come up with a way to get around it, it will stifle many who will just give up trying. :withstupid:

I didn't say the players were slow. I said they aren't the quality that they used to be.

That was my thought also. I'm very lenient with my regulars now. A lot of them change their songs as they are coming to the stage or don't tell me what they are singing until they come up. I'd definitely have to retrain them that would be the biggest problem.

Definitely would be an issue...changing their minds. Still quick but not as quickly as computer - I can have a song entered and playing in less than 10 seconds in most cases. You're right Lonman - I've been to shows where sometimes there is a 2-3 minute lag between singers. x 10 singers and you've burned 20 minutes or 5 singers. Doesn't make sense but it happens all the time.

Oh I haven't gone that far yet, if they don't give me a slip or at least tell me their next song before I get back to their spot, they miss out until the next round when their turn comes back up. I wouldn't just call them up in their spot without a song given.

I would bet that those voting "Yes! I am a KJ, no matter what!" would have a completely different answer if you took one extra step back-in-time to cassettes and printed lyrics like the REAL old school days.

I remember those days! And you're right. I probably wouldn't go back to cassettes. That's a bit much, IMHO. But as for Cd's, no problem. It would take me a bit to organize my main collection, and would mean that many of the songs in my main rig wouldn't be available until I got it organized, but I could get by with my second rental set until I did, and I'm pretty sure my singers would have the patience to wait it out. However, that will probably not happen.
