If you could no longer run your shows from your laptop/computer, would you go back to using disks?

Yea, I would go back, but kicking and screaming all the way. Like others it would take a while to reorganize my disc system to bring it up to date, but it could be done.

Would really miss the ease of last second song changes and the singer history as a lot of my regulars have gotten lazy about using the book.

I would bet that those voting "Yes! I am a KJ, no matter what!" would have a completely different answer if you took one extra step back-in-time to cassettes and printed lyrics like the REAL old school days.

I remember those days! And you're right. I probably wouldn't go back to cassettes. That's a bit much, IMHO. But as for Cd's, no problem. It would take me a bit to organize my main collection, and would mean that many of the songs in my main rig wouldn't be available until I got it organized, but I could get by with my second rental set until I did, and I'm pretty sure my singers would have the patience to wait it out. However, that will probably not happen.

FUNNY...guess I'm not the only one who stopped labeling and placing in cases when I started just uploading to computer. Lordy, I hate to even THINK about doing that because I have probably added 150 CDGs since I computerized. UGGG. I'd have to invest in another case, too. Kicking and screaming....

Only 150? Gawd! Mine's a real mess then! I have easily well over triple that, that hasn't been properly sorted. Add to that my recent purchases, and I'm in real trouble!

Call me old school, I still label & catalog each disc I enter in the computer then put it in it's proper disc spot. Since I still keep the discs at my shows, it's come in handy if the computer does actually crash (equivalent to a disc skipping in the midst of a show for those disc users wanting to say na na na  ). At least I don't have to wait a few minutes to reboot, cue the next song & away we go!!!!

The real question is COULD you go back ?
Are there really any PRO cdg players left ? or are they all just consumer grade?
I voted NO --no way I would go back to disc based !!

Not really a realistic question ... I wouldn't use ALBUMS either !!!

Like asking an accountant if they would go back to using handwritten spreadsheets and a calculator instead of a computer LOL

Lonnie, I would expect NO less from you! Now I feel guilty...But I also have all of mine stored, the cases are full, and I'd actually have to invest in another case, which seems a pointless investment at this point.

That's the whole reason I DON'T use a singer history.... I want them to try new stuff, not the same stuff for the next century. From time to time they will ask me if I have a history and I tell them; "nope, why do we want to hear the same song you did last week, and the week before, and the week before?"

Can you mnetion/link to them? Since the JVC/RSQ & Pioneer players, I haven't really found anything i'd trust for every night use. Which is why I have 10 players in my collection that will get reserviced until they cannot be serviced no more.

I could go back to CD's if I absolutely HAD TO. I'm as legit as anyone else, I have my store bought CD's, (although I need to gather my receipts for any downloads I've had in the last coule of years!).

But if someone wants to tell me that they can run a show as fast as mine off of CDG's... you are wrong, wrong, wrong! If someone changes a song at the last minute, I can simply change the number on the computer. And do you want to tell me that you want to carry nearly 1000 cd's around with you?? Can a CD player cue up a CD in less that 4 seconds??

Let me tell you a story that may get me in trouble with all of the spies on here. I had two 400 DVD disc (all original BTW) players in my system (PITA). One night, I was pushing the cart back through the kitchen, and it took a dive. I lost about 40 discs that night. That was the night that I started transfering all of my discs to a hard drive. It took me more than 5 months to get everything copied, but now I have a drive that I can carry over to the next gig with no hernias.

So if I'm illegal (since that's what this site is about now) because I moved my stuff to hard drive, than so be it. Like Lonman, I have my discs, but I chose to bring all 800 on a hard drive instead of lugging them around. Perhaps some day I will make money from this business.

I would, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

I agree with the player issue. Also, I sold my last 6-pack cartridge system several months ago (to someone on this board). That was the only player I would want to use for a regular gig. I remember everything there was to haul around...I think that would be the worst part.

No the last minute change is actually the only exception to a computer (and toquitehonestisnota common occurance, MAYBE 3 or 4 times a night IF that) - but again, I could usually get last minute change disc pulled & loaded & cued in less than 30 seconds, but yes other than that, I can run a show with discs as fast (if not faster) than a computer. 2 players, 1 always cued up with the next singer - here's where the sometimes faster comes into play, I could pre-cue the song to bypass the title screens - shaving anywhere from 5-10 seconds per song. There were also several songs that had unneccesarily long intros - NIB-Black Sabbath, 1 full minute of bass solo at the beginning, Holy Diver, :45 seconds of build up, Screaming In The Night 1:20 of build up - cue points written on the disc. I'd have these songs cued up at the actual song starting point. I can't do that with the computer (actually the new version of Hoster does allow to set cue points now).
Also I never let long outros play (even with the computer), once the singer is done and walks off stage, the music gets faded out. applause called, & next singer ready.
So just because you haven't maybe experienced a show run well (ok fast) with discs, doesn't mean they don't exist. I still run laserdiscs as well!

Best storage is still jewel cases. I used the half size to get 2 discs in one spot. Bigger, bulkier, but safer to the disc. Never cared for the jukebox drives.

As long as you have your discs, you would be fine.
I will continue to bring my discs to each show, not an issue for me now since I am stationary 7 nights, but even the mobile systems, I have the cases that would go with me. If nothing else, it is a quick back up system if the computer fails.
