Last Friday I did my first bar gig since last November. Been doing a few private parties here and there but have done 4 total gigs in an 8 day span including an 11 hour outdoor private party in the country.
Anyway, I knew it had to happen sooner or later. Setting up and a there was a couple at a table already looking at one of my books. Guy is looking like Elvis Costello from head to toe, could tell he was a singer, gf was a watcher. I approached them to start a little conversation and guess what they wanted to know if I did? Yep. Play their disks. Go ahead Lonnie and Bruce. I explained that I couldn't and apologized and that I hoped they would stay. This guy was good. He could do just about anything and had great stage presence. It was awesome. I got a lot of kudos about my system and my mixing skills. A few wondered how other bars had the guys they did considering their sound was less than good and didn't even know how to change a key or add some reverb. Small crowd (same bar had me fill in same week last year) most likely due to holiday weekend as I've been there a few times for their regular karaoke (which pretty much ,,,well you know) and they have some decent crowds on Fridays. 5 or pretty talented singers. All asked for my card.
Ok so did 3 gigs in 3 days last weekend and then my calendar cleared out. Lost a $550 wedding gig bid during the week for June 12th but then got a call to fill in for Ernie Peniston at a Cancer benefit. (check out Ernie on youtube, he's a legend around these parts). I moved my nieces gig to later in the evening on June 12 so I can DJ this thing from 2:30 to 6:30 PM. All the flyers and info that has been circulating has Big Ern's name on it. Hope I don't get lynched when they realize I don't sing the blues like Ernie!
Anyway, been making some good money doing private parties, don't miss my Thursday night gig (only because I have to get up at 3:40 the next day) but still looking for a Friday or Saturday gig. I feel my reputation is growing as I have been receiving calls out of the blue due to references. I hope it's due to my superior equipment and people skills.
Lots of rambling but I was born a ramblin' man and having a few glasses of wine on my first Saturday off in weeks!

Thanks!
Picked up 2 one time gigs this week, one a wedding in August and the other on June 19th ,, get this at a nude (yes naked) volleyball tourney! It's a 2 day tourney, Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday early evening, they have a dinner and then the party afterwards. Will be my biggest paying gig to date, naerly 400 bucks. Tourney is totally nude, the karaoke party will have a dress code, must wear bottoms. I've had 5 offers for free helpers! Maybe I should charge them?

Well, at least YOU get to wear something for the karaoke part. Break out the speedos.

I love hearing good news
Coed Naked Karaoke - I want the T-shirt
I've seen the signs that say " No shirt, no shoes, no service" but I've never seen " No bottoms, No singing"

Definitely sounds like things are going well...
One piece of advise, though...don't sell yourself short. Make sure you're charging enough for your private parties. It sounds like you're working for a little less than you should, but I don't know your area.

5 month stretch, 1 gig. last 5 weeks 7 gigs. Upped my prices earlier today. Didn't make sense to raise them when I was getting nothing but that snowball is getting bigger now!

I'm banking on the fact that it is volleyball and not hot dog eating. I'll take my chances!!
