Every time I see the news on this. It makes it look like Dan Stern is from Ohio, yet it is two different things.

I read the whole thing on the Karaoke Kandy Store (lightyearmusic, cheapkaraoke)
and is it true that they can have the cops go into that store and seize all their drives? Makes no sense as it appears to just be a civil suit.

I see you guys are a proud member of the KIAA. I truly hope that if it is true that the store in Ohio was selling loaded drives with Soundchoice content, etc. that SC actually makes a prime example of them.

If SC does not follow through and just settles with everything.. Piracy will not be hampered. I have spoke with many people through the years that bought from that store in Ohio and all have said the same things.. That they got loaded machines with thousands and thousands of songs without ever getting any disc. I have even seen the machines they sell first hand and there was tons of soundchoice, chartbuster, pop hits monthly, pocket songs, just tracks, legends, top hits monthly, etc.. loaded on that thing.

Is there any new updates on this?

But who am I to tell SC not to make money. I don't like the way it is going down. But still 100% support the fact that they are trying to protect their business. And yes, if they have any unlicensed music, may the record industry slam them hard too!

So you don't have a problem using pirated (unlicensed) music on your system because it's "between SC and the writers?"

That's a convenient way to disassociate yourself and justify using it.

C. Stanley,

You actually keep twisting what I am saying. Nothing worse than looking for a fight. I am not on here to fight with anyone. To make more clear what I said.

1. If Soundchoice is suing people over using their trademark.. the actual sound choice name, then I support that.

2. If they do not license all the music they release to the public, may they get slammed too.

Once again, I am not looking to fight in here.. So please stop sending such rebuttles to my thoughts as you are taking it out of context.

I for one will lose ALL FAITH if they settle with a store of all people. That would totally tell me that this is all about money and not about protecting the kj's out there that have purchased disc for each of their systems. Thanks for letting me hop on the piracy news train!

Get ready to lose faith!
This is totally about money and has NOTHING whatsoever to do with protecting legit KJ's. SC has ZERO interest in what happens to legit KJ'z. After all, they've already paid for their discs. Why should SC care what happens to them?
Don't get me wrong. SC is entirely entitled to get what's due them monetarily, but don't fool yourself into believing that they have some other altruistic motive for doing so, such as "helping" legit KJ's, because they most certainly do not!

I know what you are saying. They must not realize that the people who did buy disc through the years should be the ones they try to help out with this venture. They should be doing this to help stamp out piracy as well.

The lawsuit against the Karaoke Kandy Store (lightyearmusic, cheapkaraoke) is the only one I see that is against an actual retail store. They are in Ohio and for years the rumors have been flying about them selling loaded drives without giving the disc with the purchase. This is the lawsuit that needs for Soundchoice to see it through.
If they settle with a store as well. That clearly shows that they are not looking to make examples of ANYONE and it is just all about money. That will be a real shame.

If I was a manufacturer and some store was basically loading all my music on drives and making money off of consumers in the process. I would be pushing for criminal action and NEVER settle with scumbags like that. (alleged scumbags of course, lol)

I cannot make it any clearer to you than this:
It IS all about the money. It is NOT about ANYTHING ELSE!

Just watch and see. SC will settle for what they think is a reasonable sum. There will be NO example made of anyone. The only thing that SC is looking for is MONEY.

Please people! Stop trying to make it appear that SC has other altruistic reasons for suing. They don't. Why should they?
They are a karaoke disc manufacturer and nothing else. They do no care about the KJ industry as a whole and whether there is unfair competition between KJ's, or not. It does not affect them in the least where their business model is concerned.
The only thing they care about is whether they get paid for their discs, and that's really as it should be.

Agreed- almost. Actually, as far as I know they are out of the disc manufacturing business- or the music production business at this point. The talk about re-entering the business in the future with MP3 discs, but their prime business plan right now is income through settlements. Kurt has said that.

In other words, they are no longer in the karaoke business AT AL, adding weight to Di's comments that they don't care.

Personally, I don't believe they will re-enter the business, but if they do, it would surprise me if the did it under the SC name. Their actions have seriously tarnished it.

none the less of the way we all have different opinions. id like to see the pirates that never bought a disk nor enough to cover such a vast library leave the market. some of us have been around awhile and paid the dues buyings lasers at 100 per or cdgs at 35.95 ea

i still own my disks even after digitizing , run 1 show from 1 master no more. thats a debate in itself heard it all before. but owning 4k cdgs and around 400 lasers i know i paid to be on the floor unlike the newbies who comes along goes from owning less than a handful of disks to a drive of 70k or more. FACT IS FACT its only hurt us all!

that said it will take all of us educating bar owners n clubs on the fact of what needs to be done. but lets not skirt he issue the copy pirates and 3plus systems run off of one master need to go.

my rant is over here is the soapbox..

let the KARMA begin and good luck

CHEERS

Anyone hear anything else regarding the lawsuit against the Karaoke Kandy Store in Ohio?

You may not for a while. There will be a lot of forensics and investigation of company records. The FBI doesn't move very fast.

IF the FBI is involved, it's not just a civil complaint anymore. It's Federal and will undoubtedly include copyright infringement, trademark violations, and mail fraud. I don't think SC will be getting anything out of this except that the guy will be shut down. However, if he doesn't go to jail, he'll change his name and be back tomorrow.

I agree here, Vamp. It is going to be up to us to "inspect what we expect!" We will have to do our part to get the illegals out of the business. Education is just one step. But we need to be involved or we are just crying in our beard expecting SC to clean up the industry. IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN! They don't have the same motives as we do. Karaoke Piracy is unfair competition and we need to find a way to combat it!

And I agree with you 100%. Nobody is going to make an example out anyone. Case in point...

There is a link on Chartbuster's website that says "report offenders". Well, I've used that link to report a pirate with a library of between 40 and 50 thousand songs. In fact, I've used it twice. And you know what...here it is 6 months later and this guy is still playing there.

After you fill in the information on their link, a screen pops up and says "Thank You, We Will Take Action". Really??? When??? Or is this just a deterent and nothing is going to happen at all.

So, you're right, it's all about money. Nobody really cares about honest KJ and what we're up against. The whole thing is a big joke. Sad but true.

Hey guys,
many of you are slamming SC.

WHY ?

They are a business.
You want them to put what money they have
into doing what the law should be doing for them.
The money they recover from suing may allow them to break even.
They will win some and loose some.
They know that.

It will be the lawyers that win on this one.

All of you are just as responsible as SC are.
Why do you expect more from them than you are willing to do yourself.

Ok you paid money to them for a product with limitations
that were printed on the disk you considered worth while buying.

You are a business like they are.
Pirates are taking money out of your pockets too.

SC are willing and trying to do something about it.
If they do recover some money... Good on them.

As far as supporting the KJ goes they will do so, within their budget.
They are also playing politics here which is a hard game to win.
Infact that is one they can not win.
They know that.
Yet they are still trying.

Please guys...
You can bicker amungst yourselves till hell freezes over.
Or you can pull together.
It sort of worked for the dastardly Borg.

Maybe... Just maybe...

The problem is the sue first, ask questions later tactics they are using. I've spent a ton of money on SC discs, but it's just not worth dealing with this crap. Nothing like punishing your customers for purchasing your products. That's why we decided to eliminate SC from our shows altogether. Frankly, I was worried the customers would have a hard time with it, but frankly, they don't seem to care.

Birdofsong is absolutely correct, there was a life before Sound Choice and there really is a life after SC. Shows that consist of patrons that are there to have fun are not affected (like ours) but I'm sure if your shows are full of "serious performers " then it might be another story.

Naw, no attack... However, your views are very easy to understand... provided you live in the UK and use only discs....

If you were using a computer, you might have a different opinion if SC was suing all the KJ's in your city using computers and it was a little closer to home.

Like Birdofsong said, we don't see any reason to support a company that bites the very hands that fed it for so long, so we just decided that the best thing to do was drop the brand altogether.
