I'm looking for reviews on this:
http://www.numark.com/kmx02

Basically, I find the regular deck players to be cumbersome. If anyone can recommend a good component player, I'm all ears.

I had the Numark CDN25G in service for 3+ years. It is built like a tank, and very very good overall quality.

The unit you have below is going to be a good player, but by being a DJ mixer, instead of a live sound mixer, you are going to lose a ton of flexibility. The mic pre-amps are also going to be average at best.

Get a Numark CDN25G and a good small-format mixer. This combo will sound much BETTER and have a ton more flexibility in tone control and upgradability.

Bad news tho,, the Numark CDN25G is no longer being manufactured. I own one, it's been a great machine with almost 6 years of dependable service. But I wanted to buy a second one for my backup system, but found out they no longer make this model. I haven't heard of what Numark is replacing it yet. Instead, I bought the RSQ NEO NK2000. It seems to work just fine, but I would prefer the Numark anyday.

Good luck in your search.

There are still quite a few sites with inventory of the CDN25G. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one used, either, if you can find one on Ebay or Craigslist. Just plan on cleaning the laser if you get a used unit.

Good luck!

UPDATE: Two left NEW from an Amazon supplier for $180.00 +$26.00 shipping. That's a steal. If you want to buy this unit, here is a great deal!

Dr. John, I guess all product lines have some % of lemons. Numark overall makes good stuff, and has good customer service.

Did you claim the warranty on your unit and get a new one, or get your money back and buy something else? What player do you recommend?

My CDN25G was in service for 300+ shows, after which I sold it for 66% of the full retail. The best player I've owned to date.

It has a key changer, though not a digital key changer. It has the type where it changes the key by speeding up or slowing down the disc slightly. Not ideal, but I never had any complaints.

I have a bunch of anal singers. This one guy actually looks at the key before the song starts playing and has me take it down so many steps. I need the key changer (as opposed to pitch changer), so this unit would be no good to me.

Can anyone else suggest a unit that is closer to the a DJ-type setup?

I know some will howl, but try the VocoPro CDG9000. It's a dual deck rack mount, has both pitch and key change. The price is steep if you buy it new, but check around and you can sometimes find a used one for a reasonable amount. I've had a CDG8000 and a CDG9000 for years and never had a lick of trouble with either of them.

I've never owned a Voco Pro. Why do they get such a bad rap?

Mostly quality/reliability plus usually very overpriced.

Are there any other dual deck rack mounts that have both pitch and key change.

Most of their gear could be described as mid through high end consumer to low end pro and (like most so called Karaoke specific gear) is generally over priced. Like any company some of their stuff suffers from quality issues, it just seems that they have more than others. That said, some of their gear is really nice also. I own a number of their decks and have never had any real issues with any of them. The time I needed repair work done was because I bought a used CDG 8000 on ebay that had a bad deck ( knew it was bad when I bought it, but it was a great price). I live about 1/2 hr from their HQ, when I dropped the deck off they told me to go have lunch, 2 hrs later they had replaced the bad drive and it's performed perfect since then.

With careful shopping you can sometimes get some good deals but for straight new retail you can generally find much better for less by sticking with non karaoke specific gear. For what you're looking for the VocoPro CDG 9000 is the only duel deck that I know that has both the pitch and key controls, just shop around and try find a used one or a closeout sale for a decent price because new they are normally overpriced.

Hope that made sense.

Karen
