I was all set to purchase a QSC GX5 - 26 lbs 500w x 2 @80hms power amp - $399

I liked the fact that it was light as one of my earlier power amps from Peavey weight 45lbs ==and once you get all that racked it seems heavier.

But now I see that MF seems to be blowing out some older model CROWNS XLS802D FOR $299 ..SAME POWER but I was surprised to see it only weighs 29lbs ... I thought it would be much heavier. The CROWN also comes with a 3 year no fault warranty.

Any reason to spend the additional $100 on the QSC ?

(my last amp was a Crown Xls602d and work perfectly)

Wow...that's a helluva deal on a premium amp. I would say go for the Crown!

I still own a Crown XLS402 that is still going strong after many years.

Good amplifier, good price. Go for it. FYI the XLS802D will bridge and will, in fact, drive 2 ohms per channel (though it is not in the specifications for 15A cordset compliance reasons) unlike the GX5.

(EDIT: Fixed typo in quote mark-up)

Crown has the advantage of being able to run the 2 ohm per channel loads (although as stated, even on Crowns own site and documentation doesn't state any lower than 4 ohms) and bridge to 8 ohms - which really isn't a big deal as most kj's are not using 2 ohm loads anyway nor unless you are using this for a sub or mono only setup with one 8 ohm speaker, the bridge isn't really an issue either.
The QSC is a great amp, just picked one up myself, very clean sounding and just does not get hot under heavy load, however you aren't going to go wrong with either choice. The Crown offers a 3 year warranty, the QSC offers a 6 year.

QSC has better customer service and warranty, but the crown has the better capabilities as covered here (although I doubt you'd need them). I run into those 802's all over the place, they're a solid amp and very dependable.

I just bought the Crown XLS802 and then did some CHECKING on the specs. DUH

The amp actually weighs 35lbs which is NOT what I wanted. I was looking for a liteweight amp. --HAD TO CANCEL FROM AMAZON

Seems I'm back now to looking at the QSC GX5

Lonnie -- you really like yours ? Is it everything it's advertised to be
Light and perfect for 500w speakers ?

Thanks

I replaced a smaller amp with GX5 and the clarity has greatly improved - yes a perfect match for a 500 watt speaker. It still weighs about 26 pounds, not a whole lot lighter than the Crown, but when adding up with all the other stuff you might be carrying, it's a little better weight wise.

Yeah, these amps are nice but they were recently replaced by the new Crown XLS2500 which weigh 11 lbs.

At twice the price. That's why these are so cheap...closing out the older models.

Which obviously wasn't read by LD, OP wanted a good budget amp like the QSC but found the Crown for the same price and inquired.

Yes, it was read. I just commented on why the amps were cheap.

The poster also commented the amp was too heavy. The new Crown XLS are some of the lightest most inexpensive amps on the market.
