Tag on shelf $499
Boxes underneath shelf have no price markings.
Take a box over to cashier.
Cashier points to a GEEK SQUAD sticker and says "they setup this computer and installed anti-virus."
I say "OK"
She rings me up an additional $99 charge.
I freak.
Back in PC section CSR tells me they install it for customer convenience.
They can not find any laptops without that sticker, I tried 3 different models.

I walk out without computer.

And they didn't try to charge you for the operating system?

So buy it with out the virus install wouldn't it be $499 or tell the GEEKs to uninstall it you don't want it or need it.

They had PRE-installed it on all of the models I was interested, none available without it.

I told them i didnt want it and they would not uninstall, I drove to Frys and purchased one.

But really even if they would uninstall, I think I will choose to spend my money elsewhere. It was like ordering CHEESE PIZZA and they charge me extra for LOBSTER they added to it.

Now I know I've let it all out about Best Buy on this forum before. I wouldn't buy a floppy disk from them if they gave me it and 20 bucks just to walk in and out. Biggest ripoff artists there could ever be! Even after telling my renter all my bad experiences with these nimrods, what does he do? Spends $1000 at Best Buy for a laptop for his 8 year old! Duh?????? This was right after I pointed him to a very reputable computer guru in town who would have built a comparable system for him for about half that! On top of that, he would have had service two blocks from his place. We all know the weak link in Best' Buy's armour. SERVICE AFTER THE SALE!

Sorry guys and gals but Best Buy is for suckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!

Seems all the chains are now pre-installing that garbage for "customer convenience" and then charging extra for it. I would have spoken to the manager and insisted they sell at the advertised price. When he said, "no", I would then tell him that I was going to shop elsewhere and tell him exactly why. Then I would call corporate and let them know as well
That pre-installed garbage is the biggest ripoff!

I got a Gateway 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon II dual-Core M300 with 4.0 GB RAM for $425 at Best Buy. Windows 7 installed. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

I did this very thing once with the now defunct Circuit City. I had such an awful experience. I went googling and found the email addy's of the VP's of marketing, Operations and Customer Relations. I then wrote them a letter detailing what happened, when/who/etc. I closed with "When you get your quarterly revenue report from this store and it is lower than the rest of your properties, remember this letter. THIS is why. ".

I got a personal call from one of the VP's and a $100 gift card in the mail. :D

Sometimes the squeaky wheel really does get the grease.

But did anything change at that particular store? A hundred dollar gift card is nothing to them especially if it shuts someone up.

I would contact your local News Station to inform them of what Best Buy did. Nothing beats bad press from public outcries.

Like I said, weak link is service after the sale. Hopefully your item will never need to go back.

If we buy anything from BB it is cause they have the lower price. Since we also build our own computer systems we don't worry about service afterward. Thom is great at figuring out the problems down to the component level on stuff esp computers. It was his job for awhile so he has learned to do it. I guess I got a good one to keep then since so much is computerized, lol.

The sad thing is that the MAIN Thing that "geek squad" does is UNINSTALL the extras that are added on to the computer by the computer manufacturing company (ie demo games software etc). Most of that stuff slows down the computer.

I am not talking windows components but other "extras".

Otherwise you can get virus protection for $49 or less.

I hate how Best Buy is always pulling the "bait and switch" scam. They will advertise a product that they only a few of in stock. Then after they sell out, they try to sell you a higher priced model. When possible, I shop the same product elsewhere.

If Best Buy has it mojo, it can be had elsewhere so you can ALWAYS shop somewhere else.

They had my sister in law so upset in Canada then when she walked out the door and the nice little guy who tells people goodbye (security of course) told her to have a nice day, her exact words loudly (censored) were "f##k off!" Which is totally opposite of her personality. In the end the whole family thought what she did was hilarious and they all finally agreed with me that Best Buy SUCKS! If you drive by one, keep on driving!
