I know nothing about microphones.

A standard microphone that has an on/off switch and a phono plug obviously requires power. But, how is it powered?

I want to record voice through a device that has the red and white audio jacks. I could connect an adapter to change the phono jack to red & white. Would that work?

Dynamic mic do not require power. Your mic look like it is a dynamic mic.

You won't have a power problem, but you will have a level problem. Microphones put out very small signal levels, and require a pre-amp to get them up to the level necessary to input into a recording device.

I don't know if you know what dB are, but microphones put out levels at -50db. Consumer audio inputs require -10db. Pro audio inputs require +4db. That means if you did plug the mic directly into your device, it would be veddy-veddy quiet.

The solution is to get a mixer with a pre-amp. Or probably for what you want to do, it would be better to get a regular computer recording interface ala TASCAM. But you will be better off if you say what you are trying to do and let people help you from there.....

The vid capture card that he has have a built-in pre-amp. Not very good but it should work.

It would be unusual to have a mic preamp connected to RCA jacks....and looking at the item I don't see any indication it is for mics. Also the input is stereo, and the mic output is of course mono.

The on/off switch on your mic is not for power, it's just a way to control the mic whether it is sending signal or not - like a mute button on your tv.
Also what are you trying to record on? Computer, cd recorder, etc? If you are recording to your computer, you do not need that video capture card that you have shown, your computer already has a built in mic input on the sound card that should do the trick.

There are a number of ways to get the rca levels you need for your video capture device, but possibly the simplest is one of those 'in line' karaoke mics that come with a dvd. This http://www.electotronics.com/emersonmm211plugandplaykaraokemicrophonewithforeverhitsdvd.aspx is a microphone with rca outputs. Just add a 9v battery. It's about on a par as far as quality goes with the dynamic mic first pictured. However, if you need a simple, quick fix it does what you want, and they also sell 'em in toys'r'us.

Funny, we did video over the weekend, I was doing mostly still pic.I must be very tired; mckyj may be right on this. If you already have that card, try it if it work, but if you have not, don't buy it, if your intention is to use it to record sound.
