Thanks for that Manobeer.

Would something like the Behringer XENEX 1204 be a good device to use (just a mixer and using my own pc sound card)?

I think so...

I also believe that the 1204 includes a built in USB sound card, but there may be a few different versions of the 1204.

Behringer is not exactly considered HIGH END around here, but it is miles better than all those "karaoke" toys that marketed as pro gear.

I have the Behringer XENYX X1222USB and I love it. It has everything I need in one unit.

How do i tell if the 1204 im buying has a sound card or not? :withstupid:

Where are you buying it, is there a link?

I just looked around a bit... two versions(that I found, maybe more)
One is the 1204fx= effects but no usb, seems to be older discontinued
second is 1204usb= usb but no effects.

this seems to be the current version with USB sound interface

you don't want the 1204usb as it has zero fx and would force you to either get an external fx processor or run your vocals dry. what you want is the one mentioned the x1222usb.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I think i am just going to get the x1222 :D (Is the X1204USB exactly the same as the X1222 but just with 2 less inputs?)

Just to be clear its a external sound card and mixer?

x1204usb
4 mic inputs

x1222usb
6mic inputs
7 band eq
dedicated fader for the USB input whereas on the x1204usb, all you get is a full on/off button.
feedback detection and a few other features not found on the x1204usb

Yes both have usb sound interface built in, just plug it into a usb slot on the pc.

So if i only want to input sound from the mic for karaoke at home the x1204 should be enough or should i just get the x1222 and be done with asking silly questions

No silly questions.

It really is upto you, the X1204USB has effects(unlike the 1204usb) and compressors so it should be very usable for karaoke. I was very close to getting the X1204usb. But liked the idea of having the 7band eq. I did not want to add anything later on. You need to ask yourself the added features are worth your extra $40.

The EQ is not the best but it is fully usable as are the effects and one knob compressors. To date I have not needed more than 4 mic inputs, but they are there. I usually plug in two wireless, and one corded.

Sound quality should be almost identical, only difference there is lack of the 7band EQ on the x1204usb.

Jumping onto this thread as I am in similar situation i.e. looking to implement a PC based karaoke system for casual home use.

My current (non karaoke) pc setup is PC to TV via HDMI and 5.1 direct from PC (discrete Creative xfinity xtrememusic soundcard) to Logitech Z5500 analog input. Having done some research (mainly through this forum), so far I've learned:

1. Don't buy any equipment marked for "Karaoke"
2. Buy some decent gear.

as far as equipment hookup, it has been suggested to me to get a mixer in between pc and speakersystem, with mics into the mixer and line output back into the soundcard line in so i get 1 connection to my speakers.

Is there any advantage to running this way over say a USB capable mixer? Will there be noticeable lag from using USB?

Trying to stay under $200 for a (home) quality mixer and have seen recommendations so far for :

analog only:

USB:

Do effects matter and/or enrich the home karaoke setup that much? Don't have much experience with effects, previous Karaoke experience has been at mainly Chinese karaoke bars.

New to this and appreciate the help!

Both true

Absolutely. Simple effects such a reverb, give the vocals depth. Every song you have ever heard on the radio has effects of some kind...even if those effects were passive (ie: recorded in a bathroom or cathedral for the reverb/echo).

Thanks for the input, that confirms I want something with FX. Now the question is analog vs. USB.

Do mixers with USB just take the mic inputs and transfer them via USB to the PC? If so, is there any lag because of this transfer? I see one advantage to this in my case; I would be able to have music and vocals come out through the same analog cables already in place to my speakers.

Would putting the Yamaha's analog output back into the soundcard line input effectively recreate the same scenario?

Getting another step closer!
