Just wondering how much people have invested in their KJing rig including sound system, mics, songs, songbooks, pens etc.

I know it may be hard to estimate for some who have been working at it for some time, but I am curious about a general idea.

I think right now I am at around $16,000-17,000 invested, mainly on songs, about 5-6k on hardware.

Oh my I have no idea.

When I started out I was given a CDG library practically free by a friend who was a KJ for yrs. I am very fortunate that I was able to start out with about 10,000 songs plus without the huge cost of CDGs.

Over the yrs I've bought so many things just here and there I couldn't even begin to add them all up. Not to mention backup equipment in storage, the many times I've replaced things or equipment I thought I wanted and never used. :D

Sorry Dr Fred I don't think I could give a good answer.

I had to get an estimate for insurance & it is right around 75K that I have tied up in my main rig only - that is including every little nuance, disc, equipment, pen, etc.
If I added anything else that I have at home or don't really use anymore, the figure would probably run around $100K.

Most of the stuff, I bought used from another KJ...But I also did a work up for an Insurance quote like Lonman and it was over 50K. Most of course was music!

........and I'm just getting started, really!

I am a working KJ of sorts, I suppose. I have over $26,000 in. Of that, $10,700 is music and $500 software. The rest is the too much I have spent on equipment. If I had just purchased top-notch stuff to begin with, I would have saved money.

For an accurate figure I'd have to check my tax records. However, without said reference, I'd have to conservatively guesstimate $55K; to include DJ and KJ libraries.

With all the music (DJ and KJ), audio equipment, lighting equipment that I've purchased since starting this gig, I'm in the neighborhood of around $25,000. The music is far and away the biggest portion of that.

Much of my sound and lighting gear I already had from my DJ business.

My KJ investments would be strictly my computer (Dell XPS, purchased new this year!), my library, and ancillary gear like mikes and such...about $15K.

I was also lucky enough to purchase the CD+G library of a KJ who went out of business locally, as well as other large used disc buys on eBay.

Most of the actual money I've spend has been in Audio equipment. When I started out I got a whole KJ library of about 7500 songs from a KJ widow for $500. I got the whole SC foundation series for $800 from karaoke.com. I was a singer for many years and had a nice collection of about 70 personal discs. All in all, my starting library was pretty impressive.

Since then, I've purchased two used KJ libraries for $1500 from guys who were getting out of the business. I guess that's lucky, but it was a LOT of work, checking ads, ebay and craigslist day after day after day for months looking for deals on legit discs.... that came along when I actually had the ready cash.

These days I spend about $50 a month on new music... mostly individual downloads from SBI/ Sunfly. If I buy a disc it's usually chartbuster... which is a bit of a change for me, as I use to buy A LOT of Sound Choice. My collection of discs is just over 1000 :D not counting dupes from the collections I bought... most of those I've sold on ebay. :)

I'm pretty close to $10,000 which even surprised me when I started adding it all up, because I've gotten smarter as I've gone along and bought more used stuff.

I am the sole 3K - 5K person in the survey. I thought you meant RIG as in gear, didn't think to include the Music. that would bring it to close to 10- 15K

My current replacement insurance policy for all equipment owned by the business is $830,000.

I would guess total investment is about $300,000.

I would guess I have:

Karaoke Music $35,000 to $40,000
Music $30,000 to $40,000
Music Video $8,000

Lighting and Trussing $15,000
Sound $50,000 to $60,000
Performance equipment - Computers hard drives players - $10,000

Projectors TV's and video games - $5000

Office and Equipment $5,000

Trailer $10,000

Vehicles $35,000

Not acutal numbers but it's real easy to get up above $200,000

I've been waiting for a veteran to chime in with big numbers. :)

JR, I almost had a nervous breakdown reading all that! J/K.

Over the years I've run different types of rigs and at one point had two complete systems with two full sets of music, passive gear so two very heavy full racks. Based on that, I fall in the $50G and over range altogether but right now am running powered gear and a computer so no more amps or CDG players. Music is the largest component, probably $30,000 over the years, plus probably $20,000 in DJ music, too. I have limited lighting as well but most venues I work in don't require it (no room usually). At one point we maintained 13 books as well, though now have cut that down to 8. I don't pay to advertise. Word of mouth has been our best friend. I'd like to upgrade my small singer monitor to a flat screen and with the prices dropping so rapidly I'll do that next.

I'm sure its well into 6 digits after 24 years in the DJ biz as a multi op. Buts its worth no more than the amount of insurance I have. LOL

I could never guess at the amount I have actually spent on paper and ink for books, pens and pencils, prizes for my regulars and other misc expenses such as gas etc.

Aside from the music, a great majority of which I bough second hand over several years, the most expensive thing in my setup are the cables. My guess is that over the years I have spent at least 2,000 on cables alone.

As far as insurance goes. If I had to replace everything right now, it would cost me AT LEAST 25,000.

However 90% of the music I own cannot be replaced. i have every single canadian disc ever made except Karaokemaker's Trooper and I was stupid enough to sell a GM1000 which is the only one that made a track of "Roxy Roller" by sweeny Todd.
