Ooooo....I love "Holly Holy"!!! One of my regulars sing it and "Play Me", and they are some of my favorites. I would love to hear your rendition. Do you post in the SS?

And while I have still not posted anything to the Singers Showcase, I am proud to present a link to a video from a singing contest I competed in this past Wednesday. At your convenience, I invite you to take a look.

You look great, very nice stage presence and your voice sounds really good. I'd like to see you do something a bit livelier than that Neil Diamond song. I'd love to see more videos of you singing other songs if you have some.

I've been procrastinating video taping myself for a long time. I really do want to make some videos and post them up on YouTube. I bought a Flip Ultra and the darn thing just inexplicably stopped working and they won't fix it or give me an explanation. I don't recommend buying a Flip video camera, terrible customer service and poor quality. I only used a it a few times.

I am about to pull the trigger on a Kodak Playsport, but like everything else I'm procrastinating. LOL

The winner chosen by the judges....It was hard for me to listen to the whole thing, I can't help but wonder what the judges were drinking?

The winner voted for by the audience....Audience must have been drinking something similar to what the judges were drinking... :rotflmao:

The 16 years and younger winner.....Not bad, I could listen to that and not cringe. all the ut aaah's kinda was getting on my nerve endings, but still...not bad. :biggrinthumb:

I will listen to the rest another time, but really jr2423....you should have won from what I can hear listening to those top three and comparing it to your performance.

I am not surprised by this as this is how it has been every time I ever attended a karaoke contest as an observer. The best singer or performance rarely ever wins, and that is why I stopped going to karaoke contest. The judges are either tone deaf or the contest is like a game at the county fair.....It's fixed!!!

I am not saying that all karaoke contest are fixed, but every one that I have ever seen in person was fixed and it was obvious, and so I stopped going as it wasn't worth my time to see horrible tone deaf singers win over those very good performers who had much more talent and who could sing without being pitchy.

I would have voted for you jr2423, and I am not bias as I really have no clue who you are, but I did enjoy your performance over the others that I listened to.

Thanks for posting those links, it was very interesting!! :biggrinthumb:

I should note that this wasn't a "Karaoke" contest. There were no words or screens. I did however, use a backing track and the band accompanied with that.

The judges' response was the same accross the board "While you emulate Neil Diamond the best that I've seen, I don't know what you sound like".

Oh well, go figure?

Good point about it not being karaoke, but the judges response is in my opinion rather silly. Merle Haggard had a step son who when he grew up was very talented and went on the road trying to make it in the country music biz. The Record labels said the same thing about him...Meaning that they told him that he sounded too much like Merle Haggard.

In my OP that is really stupid!!! As Merle Haggard was very popular in his day and still is with many who like him even to this day. I have had people tell me the same thing, and it is very frustrating. I would have bought this guys CD's if they had been put in the music store's, and I finally did buy his CD except I had to order it from his web site. These judges heard you singing, heard your voice, and had the nerve to vote for someone who could not make it in the music biz if there life depended on it. You on the other hand had great stage presence and sounded like a pro, and would make a great recording artist. This ignorance be it from judges or record labels is the reason why so many great singers never get a chance to get into the music biz on a higher level.

Perfect example: Alan Jackson & Randy Travis both were turned down by every record label in Nashville. Luckily they did get a break by someone else who saw there potential and now they are rich and famous.

It is silly that this type of ignorance still goes on in this day and time, but what can one do about it??? Sadly not much. :bigcry:

Vote for the person who cannot carry a tune in a bucket, just because the talented person sounds too much like the original artist of the song they are singing.
That is really sad. :banghead:
Hang in there and keep on singing, you are talented!!! :biggrinthumb:

I still keep at it even though I don't post recordings much any more, but its just to keep from getting too rusty.... :oh yeah:

I do agree about the industry in general. While talent is important, the driving factor is determined by who they think they can get the biggest return on their investment from.

But I do thank you for your vote of confidence. While I get similar reviews from those who know me, your impartial assessment lends credibility to my efforts.

Interesting choice of singers..

I'm sure the Judges and audience heard more than the crappy video did..

The pros run the video through all kinds of electronics to bring up the audio track.

Might even have a quality mic handy..

The house sound was good, but of course as you heard, the sound captured on the video camera is strictly ambient. I sure it would have been much better had it been tapped off mixer.

Hey! They recalled me for an additional try during a "Wild Card" round. Which means they thought we all deserved a second chance. This one includes a and interview in the beginning and the judges comments at the end. Note that in the original attempt, the judges implied that I should sound like myself and not Neil Diamond. well..., just listen to what they have to say after this performance :?

Hey JR, I just watched the entire vid,, and I thought you did a GREAT job of Runaround Sue. I also loved the Holly Holy song too. I know this really doesn't mean much coming from just me, but I don't think you sound anything like Neil Diamond, you sound like "you", and that is EXACTLY what it should be. I watched many of the videos of the performers, and someone in an earlier post said they would have voted for you, well I have to agree totally! You took each song you performed and made it "yours". You owned them for your performance. For a judge to say, "do only Neil Diamond" , I think that is very closed minded of them. Keep on singing and doing exactly what you are doing. GREAT JOB! :clapper: :biggrinthumb:

Thank you mrscott, I appreciate the feedback. And you're right, I don't hear Neil on the play back either, but in the live performance it apparently comes through. I hear it when I sing maybe 50% of the time, the rest of the time I just hear me. I think a lot of sounding like someone else is how well, and how close, one keeps to the original phrasing, lyrics, and staying in key. I guess it all adds into the equation for a successful vocal illusion.

And while I don’t attempt to sound like Neil or anyone else for that matter, I do attempt to sing in the same style as any original artist. I basically sing it as I hear it. If I should sound like someone familiar in the process, and it’s enjoyable to the listener, then so-much-the-better.

However, when I put myself out there to be judged, I would prefer to be judged solely on my performance(s) compared to the performance(s) of the others regardless of who I may sound like.

I used to try an emulate the original singer, but for me, that became too dull..

I change words, even gender upon occasion..

It's fun to sing, so I have fun.. Your mileage may vary..
