Tag on shelf $499
Boxes underneath shelf have no price markings.
Take a box over to cashier.
Cashier points to a GEEK SQUAD sticker and says "they setup this computer and installed anti-virus."
I say "OK"
She rings me up an additional $99 charge.
I freak.
Back in PC section CSR tells me they install it for customer convenience.
They can not find any laptops without that sticker, I tried 3 different models.

I walk out without computer.

I recently bought a laptop for my wife and ran into this same scam. Found out it's a pretty common complaint on the Best Buy forums and with the Better Business Bureau. In my case, I complained at the store and made a pretty big stink. They had 6 of the laptops I was interested in in-stock. Three were on the shelf with the Geek Squad stickers on them, the other 3 he couldn't find and had to lookup in the system. Found out they were at the Geek Squad station undergoing the same treatment. This got me pissed that they were intentionally ensuring they had no un-geeked" models in stock.

They ended up giving me the Geek Squad "optimized" laptop for the "un-geeked" price.

I would never buy accessories or any small purchases at Best Buy, but if you shop during the holiday season you WILL save money on bigger purchases. Their "black tie protection " USED to be a great deal. I had one laptop where I cracked the screen 3 times and it was replaced every time for free. They capped screen replacements to one within the last few years. Another time my computer was under warrranty and they told me to just pick out a new computer, as it was "totaled."

My last purchase, I opted to forego the retooled black tie protection plan. I figured the computer I bought was so cheap that by bypassing the bells and whistles, I could get my money's worth after only a year or so. At that point my expectation of service is already nominal.

So I guess it all depends what you're looking for out of a warehouse electronics store.

Yep, if you like the lottery, Best Buy with their price and selection, is the place to go. Good luck. I'm stepping down from my soap box.

Best Buy is a P.O.S. company. They are scam artists. Their employees are idiots.

You can get everything BB sells, and I mean everything, on line much, much cheaper. Why would anyone want to buy from them?

A friend went there interested in a Toshiba 55" LED HDTV. BB wanted arround $3000 and would not budge on the price. I got it for him at Amazon.com for $1559. A lot cheaper with none of the BS. In fact I got me one too.

Remember, friends don't let friends buy from Best Buy.

Just out of curiosity guys...
Why is it you buy new?
You can usually find a newish system much cheaper.
The manu's eg IBM, Dell, HP etc you pay more for
but their warranty is good.
You can buy a brand name at Best buy that is not supported by the manu.
How much is saving a few bucks short term worth it?
