I go for seperates for one reason.......some gigs I play involve plugging into a socket in the wall which then leads to the in house amp and then on to their Bose speakers.....if I used a powered mixer I would not be able to do this as my amp could blow their amp

The good thing about the mixer you have your eye on is that it has a MAIN OUT.
In the picture at the link, you will see the MAIN in the OUTPUT area of the mixer to the left of the power switch.
http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/qualit ... 18256a.jpg
This is a line level output and is designed to feed your main signal into either an external power amplifier or the house mixer.
I haven't plugged into a lot of house PAs, but I know that it has worked the few times I have.
If mobility is not a big deal, then the mixer and the additional power amp would be ideal as it allows more room to expand. If you like to take care of your back, and hate doing the trips to and from the venue to the van then I think the powered mixer would be more than sufficient to meet your needs.
Cheers all!
Vic in Sydney.

Well I missed out on the Mackie mixer on CL, but still considering buying a Mackie mixer. The ProFX12 looks to be a little better than the 1202 VLZ3 with USB I/O, integrated FX, and not that its a big deal, but also has the led indicator for mute on/off for each channel.
While still trying to decide on amp/cabinets I ran across the B-52 Matrix's both the 1000 series ($799) and 2000 series ($1499).
Would either of these make decent karaoke setup?
I already own a powered floor monitor that I could add.

take a look at the Behringer mixer below . for the price you can not match it.
everything you need at an affordable price. You will get mixed reviews on Behringer equipment. I am planning to buy this exact same mixer.
Just an option for you ..

Good mixer, not quite as good in the sound quality of the VLZ series, but you get the benefit of built in effects & USB capable which it can be used as a secondary (or primary) sound card I/O. If I were to make a choice between this & any Behringer, i'd opt for this personally, but that just because I have never had any luck with ANY Behringer product - EVER. Finally replaced the POS Crate PA-4. I picked up a Mackie 1202 VLZ3 @ Guitar Center. Thanks to those who recommended it. I'm very happy with my purchase.
I made a bit of financial choice on powered speakers and picked up a pair of Behringer B215D's. Sounds a lot better than the mix matched stuff I was using.
Just wanted to say thanks and you guys were right the Mackie VLZ's are very nice. This should serve me well for many years.

No I didn't. I'm don't really know enough about what I need/want so I'm trying to wait and see what I need before I just jump out and buy something.
Other than reverb what types of effects do you use?

I run 3 effect processors - minimum 2 effects going at all times, always some type of reverb, and a delay of some length & depth (usually tap synced to the beat of the song playing), but also can add a Chorus or Flange or some other kind of effect for certain songs.
Effects shouldn't be used to the point where you sound like you are singing into a cave, canyon or at echo point . Just enough to enhance the vocal to where you really can't hear but enough of it to know it wasn't there at all (dry).
For a starting point i'd look for some kind of multi effect processor with at least a good reverb - Lexicon, TC Helicon, Alesis, all have some really decent budget processors. Reverb has been on probably 99% of every recording every made since the advent of studio recording, plus it's usually added in live concerts to singers.

Yeah I used a little reverb when using that Crate PA to give it a little for lack of a better term depth. Using this mixer and new powered cabs is night/day difference than the stuff I had just pieced together from here and there. I can get by for home use for a bit until I decide on FX, unless I just run across a great deal on CraigsList or something.

Well like said, any 'pro' sound will have some sort of effect if not a minimimum of reverb on the vocals, never will will you hear a dry vocal - without some kind of effect.

Would an Alesis Quadraverb be adequate for my fx needs?
Found one on CL for $80.

It's an older unit (late 80's/early 90's), great for it's time, will be more than adequate over what you currently have if it still works well, I still have my 1990 Alesis Midiverb (one step down from the Quad) that works just fine in my rig today.

ProFX12 is my next purchase - mainly due to the fact that it has built-in effects, and not bad ones either. I have used Mackie forever, have a 12-channel board currently, two SM350s (powered speakers) which are more than adequate for an room we've done (except the college gymn) combined with a 15-inch Mackie sub. We also have the next size up powered Mackie speakers which I practically stole on CL (two with cables and stands for $400). We carry a small rack that contains mixer, Tascam CD burner, and an extra CD/DVD/CDG player. On top of the rack I place a laptop that contains bumper music. We carry all of this easily in a Windstar. SM350s are light but really the sound is very, very good. You may be able to find a pair of these on CL but they do go quickly - the little ones I believe are still close to $500 and the 450s in their new incarnation are about $750 each.

You would have been fine with the Quad if it was in good condition, but Midi 4 is still a decent processor.

Well thats the thing about buying used from someone you don't know. You never know what you're going to get. $70 more for a new unit shipped to my door seemed reasonable enough to me.
